SOURCE: 4x4 slips shiftin gears starting and stopping

you might already know but when shifting into 4wd you can shift into 4hi while driving as long as the tires,(all four) are travelling the same speed. you can't shift into 4wd if you are spinning. 4 low you have to completely stop. When you are in 4 low as you know the power of vehicle is greatly increased due to gear reduction. so if you are seeing slipping symptoms, you might want to change transmission filter. It might not be much help to you but it might prevent problems down the road. also when changing fluid be sure to put mopar transmission fluid for replacement on jeep. like gm calls for dexron. the transfer case on dodge and jeeps also takes transmission fluid. I had to replace a t-case on my friends dakota that was making a grinding noise and it turns out a seal had leaked some fluid out and burnt up some bearings. pretty expensive. they are chain driven. hope I didnt get too carried away, because I am not a transmission expert but I just wanted to share what I did know with you.

SOURCE: 1997 Audi A4 Transmission problem

Re: 1997 A4 Cabriolet A4 Convertible: Problem: Acts like plug fouled at intermitant times and or a air or transmission filter is clogged. (V6) buckles at slow cruising speeds and more noticeable when in 3rd or fourth gear approximating 25/40 miles and hour. Does not buck when rpm increasing but will not cruise at steady rate without inconsistent bucking. thankyou. [email protected]

How can I check if the oil in my autmatic gearbox is at the right level. Have changed as gearbox was beginning to slip in 4th to 5th gear

With car and trans fully warmed up (driving 15 min.) use the trans dipstick to check the fluid level with car running and trans in park, level ground.

Leak visible on transmission cooler

unless leak has gotten bad enough to lower the fluid level dramatically fixing it will not improve slippage, slipping is worn clutch surfaces or low engagement pressure, (low pressure could result from really low fluid) If you fill it to full and it still slips fixing the cooler will not help, but fixing the cooler leak is a necessary item to do anyway, keeps oil out of our ground water and off the roads making them slippery for motorcyclists.

My car , E60 2004 530D goes into "transm.failsafe " continuously. Ive reset it and then its fine for a day or 2. Thers oil under the car still ( light brown) when parked. I had the oil topped...

I do think this is a low oil condition and you need to get it addressed now.Low oil will damage the transmission very quickly. The factory trans oil in this car is a light brown and almost the color of motor oil.The oil in an automatic transmission is not just for lubrication, it is also the hydraulic and cooling medium.Low oil means low pressure which means slip which means damage.Have the car towed to a sevice facility. This transmission can cost 4 to 5 thousand to repair.Good luck!

Hi,I have a 1998 bmw 328 sport and need to know how much oil is required to fill the engine from empty(do an oil service) and also how to top up auto gearbox oil?

fill engine on flat surface, then read the dipstick.

Transmission: raise car. Run car to normal oper temp. while running unscrew top access trans fill screw. nothing should come out. fill it till it does....it is now full.

For dummies: No, there's no trans dip stick. No, unscrew the top access plug while cold and not running....most of it will drain out.

For flat out stupid people, those with an IQ of room temp on a cold day: Take it to jiffy lube so the car doesn't fall on your head and crush it.

2004 BMW ci with 58K miles Car leaks reddish fluid after driving and emits odor similar to smell of popcorn. Temp guage always in middle, no idiot lights showing. Master Cylinder-no visible leaks Brake...

oh dear, this is going to be very bad new for you, take it from me the ATM fluid is leaking out of your gearbox, it could be a rear gearbox oil seal, it could be the front gear box oil seal leaking, even the oil cooler or pipes leaking but it is leaking some were, and if its got to be took out to put in a new seal your going to need to sell a kidney or some outher part of you to pay for it, if you can put up with the leak just keep filling up your ATF fluid dont let the gearbox run dry or its realy going to cost you, as it will seize up on you and burn its self out, thats a new gear box then??? costly very costly! if its only a little bit of oil leaking give the motor a good wash down with a power hose under it and fill the atf up go for a drive say 10 miles then look under it, look for fresh oil (ie:red oil) around the gearbox at both ends of it, if you see any that is proof its leaking bad!!! park it over a sheet of paper over night will show how much it leaks too, i would put up with it as long as pos bet if its due for an MOT give it a realy good power wash down first to get rid of any oil, a little leak will still pass, a big un, wont! any oil seal can just fail on you like this one has but they fail much faster if they get over heated due to lack of oil in them
sorry for the bad news, think of selling the kids to pay for a new gearbox,, now there's an idear?

Trans failsafe prog came on and sluggish start out stuck in 3rd gear, abs light comes on with dsc light and sometimes engine light and speedo/odometer and temp guage not working

this is common, most of the time water gets into the ecu box, you can tell this by looking inside the black box under the bonnet, the worst ones have a white holder inside them.
check this if not get a plug in to see.
sometimes this message isnt there, if so check the gearbox oil if you have a 5hp box it has to be running then remove large allen key, if it drips out its full, bear in mind there will be oil ontop of plug that is stuck in thread. if low on oil it this will give u the prob

You have an alternator or battery concerne, low voltage caused all the other problems,Start with a battery, then have alternator tested. The failsafes are designed to keep from burning up solenoids and other electronic components.

Can a replaced non programmed abs affect auto gearbox

The ABS control unit does need to be coded to the vehicle. After coding the control unit, an End-Belt run test must be performed. I know that you will also have transmission faults stored, because the Trans warning is set since the control unit has not been coded
and the control units communicate constantly during engine operation. The trans uses abs input for shift characteristics and helps with power reduction during evasive driving control. A dealer should be able to code and perform the end run test and usually charge about an 1hr fee. They will also need to quick delete other fault memories.
