This is not simple and requires a technician with the proper knowledge. Modern engines are non interference which means with the timing improperly set you can severly damage the engine. If the engine has not been damged already I would have the vehicle towed to someone who could repair it. Odds are if the timing is off and the engine wont crank the head has already been damaged.

jonesja3...I think you may be mistaken about the meaning of non-interference engines. A non-interference WILL NOT be damaged if the timing is off or the belt breaks. Only the interference engines could possibly be damaged. They don't always get damaged. I had a 1993 Honda Accord that had a timing belt break while I was driving and my local garage said they wouldn't touch it because it had an interference engine. I replaced both timing belts myself and she fired right up with no valve train damage. Just got lucky!

How do I replace the alternator belt on a 2002 avalon

I have included an image for reference. There is a tensioner included in the pulleys the belt travels around. (Red X). There is also a spring loaded lever point you use to release the tension on the belt.
Remove the covers to expose the belt. **Take a photo or draw the route the belt takes so you don't forget when putting the new one back on.**
Facing the belt and using a ring spanner or swan neck spanner, turn the adjuster clockwise, (green circle). **NOTE** There will be a lot of tension on the spring so take your time as it could slip and snap back into place, taking at least one knuckle with it. I always find a helper at this point makes the whole thing A LOT easier.
Once the adjuster is swung over the belt should slide off one of the pulleys and then off completely. Gently ease the adjuster back to it's rest position.
Replace as follows. Using your reference image and your helper, swing the adjuster clockwise as far as you can. Position the belt, making sure it is squarely positioned on each pulley. GENTLY ease the adjuster back off and recheck it is squarely set on all the pulleys.
At this point you can start the vehicle to check the belt in running correctly then after turning the engine OFF refit any covers over the belt.

My 1998 Toyota Avalon XLS squeals loadly when I start the engine and the fan is on in the car. I turn of the fan and it stops. After driving I turn the fan back on and don't get the squeal anym

Almost certainly one or more of the drive belts (not the timing belt) on the engine needs an increase in tension. It may tell you about this in the owner's handbook.

If not you can either ask a mechanic to do this straightforward job for you, or try it yourself. You can download a zipped service manual from here

and look these belts up in the charging section and steering section.

Disconnect the battery before starting the job! Your power cable from the alternator will be disconnected and could potentially ground out if your battery is not disconnected!

  1. REMOVE DRIVE BELT Loosen the pivot bolt, adjusting lock bolt and adjusting bolt, and remove the drive belt.

How do you change the alternator belt on a 2002 toyota avalon xls

There are two bolts on the alternator:
One holds it in position on a rail to adjust belt tension and the other mounts it to a brace. Loosen both of these and angle the alternator to release the belt tension and remove the belt. Put the new one on and reverse your removal technique. You want the belt taut, but not tight. If it squeals when it's running, just adjust the tension to make it a little bit tighter.

Make sure you routed it correctly. One of the most common mistakes I make is trying to put belt around a tensioner that belt just rides on. Hope that helps.
