1996 Toyota 4runner 4 Wheel Drive Problem

I have read and followed the instructions in the owners manul ans can't get the 4 wheel drive to engage. I set the shift lever to 4H and press the 4WD button on the side of the shift lever. The indicator light on the dash board does not come on, and the front end is still not locked in.....Any suggestions?

    i had same prob,,,all i did was take hose that goes from top of motor to the ingager on the alex..i blew into both hoses and sh it u not wd works gerat..

My 1990 4runner same thing..I blew in the vac line that goes 2 the add on the front axel...now 4wd works fine

If i take a ECM out a '92 toyota 4runner with 4-wheel drive will it work in the same year 4runner that is only 2-wheel drive.
I don't see why it would not work.
The ecm would not have any connection with the drivetrain other than the engine.
The prom or chip should change the settings for timing and other factors.

My car cranks but does not start. I replaced the starter but it did not make a difference. It is a 1996 4runner 2 wheel drive.
If it cranks but won't start the starter is already working which you now know.
You would have to figure out if you are missing spark to the plugs or fuel to the injectors, or low compression to proceed.
