1999 f250 v10 automatic trans. 1st, 2nd, and overdrive work, but will not go into 3rd or 4th.
I would stay away from a used trans . that trans will need to come out to be fixed . why not rebuild when its out . more then likley heat from pulling is the proublem . there is no bnd ajustment on most newer transes we did that in the 70 s they use clutch packs now days
Call a dealer and they will tell you you are suppose to change your transmission fluid every 2 years or 30,000miles but if you was carrying this much load you may have over heated the transmission so I would shop around and get a good deal at a transmission place where they can replace the filter and the fluid and adjust the bands on the transmission if needed
the bands are inside the transmission they are bands that go around the shaft of the transmission inside so it can shift you can call around and look for a place that rebuilds transmissions and tell them that you would like them to look at the problem you are having at the same time you be present so you can see them take the pan off and show you what I am talking about also there is a place called Joe's transmission it is in Boyne City Michigan and the phone number is 231-582-2726 and here is another one called Auto Barn the address is 1601-1635 East State Rd Lima Ohio 45810 this is one mile east of route 65 over 200 used motors and transmissions in stock installation available with warrenty phone number 419-641-4853 and the other number is 1-800-541-5462 but also after taking it to a transmission place check around at a salvage yard near you for one that offers warrenty on their parts and some salvage places does installation also

The problem with the transmission started when I went on the road for 200 miles each way. I was towing a 2000lb trailer on the way down and the problem started as I got to my destination. I put 2500lbs on the trailer and headed home. On the way home I had 1st, 2nd, and overdrive. One time it shifted down to 4th. The next day everything worked. This was true until today after I drove for 20 minutes. I let the truck sit for 4 hours and it worked fine again. I have never had a transmission flush as someone told me if you didn't do it regularly you could cause more damage than not doing it.
I took the pickup to the Ford dealer he said it checks out ok electronically. He said it must be something inside the transmission and it would have to be taken apart to find out what the problem is. Although, he would be glad to replace it and the tranny cooler for $4,300. So what exactly are band adjustments? It sounds like I should at least seek other options before plowing that much into the pickup, although I would if I had to because it has been such a great pickup.
you may need to go somewhere where they can trouble shoot to check the selonoid sensor on the transmission and also has it ever had a tranny service done
i guess it won't shift to overdrive
