96 automatic neon stiff to shift

Do i need a new shifter cable? Still shifts gears but very stiff. If so, is there an aftermarket part or dealer only? What is the part called?

SOURCE: removal of gear shift knob

There are two types of shift knobs. One that unscrews and one that the lower trim of the shift knob separates from the knob using a trim stick. After separating the lower trim from the knob pull upward to release the knob from the shift lever. If a new shifter assembly is being installed, unscrew the original shift knob or separate the lower trim from the knob and pull up to remove the knob from the shift lever. Screw the knob onto the new shifter assembly's lever no more than 14 turns or install the lower trim onto the shift lever then push the knob onto the shift lever and install the lower trim piece onto the shift knob.

Hi,

Here is some possible reasons why your transmission is having those problems .

* The gear shift linkage is binding
* There is an internal problem in the transmission
* The throttle cable is broken or disconnected
* The vacuum modulator on the transmission is faulty or the vacuum line is damaged
* The electronic transmission control circuit may be faulty

SOURCE: where is the shift solenoid located on a 2003 dodge neon sxt

the trans shift solenoid pack is bolted to the side of the trans closer to the radiator. it is rather large and there are three 10mm bolts holding it to the trans. it is under the input speed sensor and just under the spot where the cooler lines go into the trans.

1988 Dodge Ram 50 Automatic shifts into park reverse and neutral. But physically won't go into drive gears.

Disconnect shift cable from transmission linkage and try to manually put transmission in drive gear ( make sure wheels chocked/park brake on ). If transmission goes into drive gear, suspect a shift cable or shifter assembly problem. If you can't manually shift into drive gear by hand with cable disconnected, suspect internal transmission/shift linkage issue

05 automatic V6 mustang has a stiff shifter and is hard to put from park to other gears and vice versa. What is its problem and how do I fix it?

The shifting cables can go bad and freeze up. If your mechanically inclined you can set emergency parking brake then disconnect cable on the side of your transmission and see how hard it is to shift. If stiff remove center console and disconnect cable from shifter. Then it should move freely because the frozen cable isn't connected. Replace bad cable or what ever part may have been binding.

94 camaro z28 automatic shifte was stiff jerked it to first gear like a idiot now stuck in first starts up in first still got underneath I can change gears w transmission lever but shift cable in park only...

If the car starts in first, it sounds like you have a problem with the lock cable. There should be a cable from steering column to shifter that prevents the shifter from moving out of park.

Remove the center console and examine the cables. Disconnect the one from the steering column and see if that frees up the shifter. If it does, you will need to find out what is jamming the steering column. Check the cable for frays 1st. Then make sure you didn't drop something down the center console, last look at the cable connection behind the ignition key.... when you are poking around the steering column, disconnect the battery and let is sit for a few minutes or you risk the air-bags blowing up in your face.

A long time ago, I melted a gear shift cable when I didn't have a good ground on the engine block. When the car started, the power when through the shifter cable and it must have gone red hot and melted.

Had transmission apart to fix hole. now gear shift is stiff ??? could it be in transmission or is shift cable seized?

This can be diagnosed by removing cables at the trans and verifying cables and shifter, then the movement of the actual shifter housing on the trans. Shift cables are a fairly common item

95 saturn sl 2 5 speed manual transmission, clutch pedal is fine. shifter wont go into gear

This vehicle has a pair of shift cables which attatches to the shifter and runs to the transmission shift housing. To diagnose, removal of the center console is in order so you can inspect and verify the shifter/cable connections and movement, then verify the cables move the linkages properly at the transmission . These cables are a fairly common failed part and sold as the set, these are a dealer item and no aftermarket cables are available .

More then likely the cable from the shift lock solenoid that unlocks the shifter is binding up or the shift lock solenoid is sticking..
