When I was driving and I switch to reverse to back up, I heard a loud thump and it jerked the whole car. Afterwards, when I was in Drive, the car would not switch above second gear. It would only rev higher. What is the problem with this? Is it the shift indicator. This would not let me drive above 30 mph. Switching it to 3 or 2 did nothing. When I switch to neutral, I hear a small shift but thats it. While in reverse, I have to rev up a small amount for it to go in reverse. As for drive. At a complete stop, I need to rev a bit for it to start moving. It's almost like a small ****. Again, thanks to anyone that can help me. It says "Service Engine Soon" on the dashboard.
Who care about the Service soon light, since you stated you are a 1993 you are OBD 1,this is not a bad thing but if you pulled a code it would probable read 02 lean bank 1, The real problem is the whole transmission,Wont rev higher in other word its slipping, need to rev higher just to start moving ,well its slipping the solution is a rebuilt transmission,or a better car.

This could be a dirty filter. i would start there and replace fluids with lucas tranny fluid. Does it change when the car warms up i wonder ?

2nd gear & reverse share the same clutch. You probally have a loose Input shaft nut that needs retorqued.Located in the endcover of trans. You will need a gasket, fluid & a manual.Re-Torque to 110ft lbs

remove the belt and spin all of the pulleys by hand to make sure they all spin freely. the knocking noise is probebly a pulley locked up.

Ok, remove the console so you can look at the shifter, there is a plastic piece that attaches the cable to the shifter knob, this breakes, you can go to Saturn ,but they want almost $200 for both cables (they don't sell the plastic piece) BUT THERE IS GOOD NEWS, Napa sells the plastic replacement part at a cost of $20 I am assuming that your car is a manual, part is fairly easy to install,(remove the shifter without removing the cables)
Good luck

I had this same problem with my 1998 SL2 after about 170,000 miles. There is a plastic bushing at the end of the shifter cable that holds the cable to the shifter - it probably broke. Remove the center console inside the car to access the bottom of the shifter. I checked my local Saturn dealer to find the replacement cables (come as a set) are more than $200. So I went to Lowes and bought a beam clamp and a large washer to hold the cable to the shifter. It has been working fine for more than 28,000 miles and cost less than $3

it rev all the way. It cant switch to a higher gear. While driving, I also heard a cable snap. Im not sure if it was something I hit since I was driving on the side. This noise happened after it wouldn't speed above 25-30 mph
