The transmission is probably toast from overheated fluid (burnt). That is how transmission fluid turns a very dark color.
You should get a second opinion, but I doubt that a drain and refill will restore the transmission.

Transmission fluid is almost black

1st your sure your not looking at the motor oil instead (that color is not good on motor oil either) , but if your sure your looking at the transmission fluid then id say that trans has problems ! a fluid /filter change is the place to start , but if that's no good and trans still doesn't work well then a rebuild is the best way to eliminate any problems

My 93 crown victory Lx is leaking fluid from the back end of the motor and the front end of the transmission what is and how I fix it step by step

If its dark color it is likely rear main seal on engine. If it is red color it is front seal on transmission. check fluid levels, overfilling engine oil or transmission fluid can cause this also. both require major removal of tyranny etc. If you never done this get qualified help. .

How to check trans oil level and condition

  • There is a 8mm or 10mm plug on the back of the transmission (underneath the car) When you pull that plug if fluid comes out then it it full. If not you add fluid until it just barely comes out that hole and then the transmission is full.
  • Now you add fluid from the top of the transmission. You have to look way down in the engine bay on top of the transmission for a red or black cap. It may say "do not open" or "open by a technician only." Take and pull that cap off and this is the fill spout for the transmission. It's a fill only, not a check. Add from this spout until it comes out that little plug on the back of the transmission.
  • You will hear people call this a "sealed" transmission of "non-serviceable." Now you can tell them rubbish lol.
  • To check the condition you can look to see if it is getting black or smells burnt. After 50,000 miles the fluid needs flushed and after 100,000 miles you need to change the filter and gasket for the transmission.

Oil leaking or burning

this can be very simple to solve, after you've driven the car for,say,20 miles or maybe even 15 miles, place a piece of plain brown cardboard under the motor on ground.under the motor.make sure the engines not running, just slide the cardboard under the motor on the ground.you can even put a big piece under the whole front of car, from side to side. your whole motor is in front, including the transmission. black fluid is oil leak, red fluid is transmission fluid. if your engines burning oil, then you'll be adding oil to your engine constantly. depending on how often you drive your vehicle. just remember black fluids oil leak, red fluids, transmission fluid leak. if your motors smoking black while running, that's oil burning with your gas. you may only have a simple issue, your check engine light on? autozone or advance auto parts store can read the codes for free!! thank you,for choosing fixya.com

My 97 Chevy 1500 is leaking out from the bottom . Wat cud it possibly be?

Well, lets see... it could be engine oil, it could be coolant/antifreeze, it could be brake fluid, it could be power steering fluid, it could be windshield washer fluid, it could be transmission fluid, it could be gas, it could be differential gear oil.

How do I tell the transmission dipstick from the oil dipstick? There is a yellow one and black one but I cant tell which one is which.

Come on now
Surely you can see a dip stick entering
either the engine or transaxle

Pull either one out

Oil is sort of black
Trans Fluid sort of red

Only a guess but the motor oil will be yellow

Kia sedona automatic transmission gearbox

To fill the transmission fluid, you need a funnel that fits into the dipstick tube, add fluid there. If the fluid is black and smells burnt, that's bad. I would have the fluid changed. These transmissions don't have a filter, probally a bad idea.

We just bought this car from a private owner, oil change was due, my son was advsd by the serviceman, transmission oil is black. what does this mean.he told my son,he should replace oil asap. otherwise car...

if the transmission oil is black is either someone accidently put oil in the transmission or the transmission is due for some serious service. have the transmission flushed as soon as possible. Transmission fluid should be red in color. usually if it is a dark red almost black and smells burned the transmission has been worked very hard.
