By now you have certainly found the problem but maybe this will help someone else. Check the antifreeze level in th radiator. Make sure the engine is cold before taking the radiator cap off. You most probably are way low on antifreeze. Ther is either a leak out of the engine or on this car the most likely cause is a leaking head gasket. Get it checked by a mechanic but unless the car is in excellent condition or you can fix it yourself, just fill it up with water for the final drive to the scrap yard.

SOURCE: my 1995 ford areostar van when heat is on only blows cold air

The aerostar has a vacuum operated watervalve in the heater tubing.the valve is located on the
passenger side inner fender behind the aircleaner.with someone operating the controls inside the van
you can check to see if you get vaccum by removing the tiny hose that goes to the water valve
and checking for suction as you in the van person operates the heater conthttp://www.fixya.com/PostAnswer.aspx?thid=1323651&prdid=696348rols. If you have no
vaccum there is a break in the hose between the intake manifold and the valve. If you do get
vaccum check to see if the valve changes position from vaccum on to vaccum off. you can see
this motion on the small lever on the side of the valve. If the valve lever doesn't move you can
move it manually to allow the water to flow through the heater core. if the valve won't move manually
there is an obstruction in the valve. If it does move manually the vaccum diaphragm is gone.
replace the valve. if it moves to the manual open position you can hold it open with a tywrap.
before you get to this point you should first check to see that there is enough coolant in the
radiator. If you still have no heat you can check the coolant flow through the heater core. to do
this remove both heater hoses from the valve and pump water from a hose into one of the hoses
water should flow from the other hose. If it doesn't the heater core is blocked. The rear heater
operates the same way with the watervalve under the van just behind the drivers seat.
Good luck.

SOURCE: front heat works, but rear blows cold air only

With your front heat working the most likely cause for the rear heat not to work is that there is an obstruction in the line that is preventing the warm coolant to get to the rear heater core or the rear heater core itself is plugged and not circulating. Another possible cause could be low coolant level where the system has enough coolant to provide the front system with enought warm coolant but not the rear system. Hope this helps

SOURCE: 1987 ford ranger 2.3fi - My heater doesn't blow hot air.

Your thermostat may be stuck in a partially opened position. This would account for the low temp while driving. You can check it by removing it (it should be closed when at room temp, if it's not, it's defective) and dropping it into a pot of boiling water, it should open completely within a few seconds. Also make sure your coolant level is correct, and when idling, check to make sure the engine cooling fan is kicking on when the engine temp rises.

Heat goes in and out and the temp gauge goes up and down

Your temp sensor has nothing to do with your heater. The temp sensor needs coolant in order to work properly. So first check the coolant level because if it is low your heater will act the way you describe. Once the coolant gets low enough the heater will blow cold. Another possibility is the radiator cap. After the engine has warmed up it expands when it cools down it contracts. As it is contracting if the cap is weak air can be drawn into the system and cause air pockets to form and will cause the same problem

If the line from the rocker arm to the air duct on an 98 oldsmobile silhouette is not hooked up will that cause problems with heat , cold air when gauge is reading hot?

The hose from the valve cover to the air cleaner is just a fresh air source for the crankcase.
What you are describing is a radiator low on coolant or has air in the cooling system.

It sounds like your thermostat is sticking. You can tell when it sticks when your temp gauge spikes high and your blower won't blow heat and when it finally opens your temp gauge goes back down and you have heat again.
