I was doing fine 2 weeks ago and all of the sudden at the bank teller of all places my 99 tahoe surges and starts to die. I parked , called a buddy and we were gonna tow it to my place when it started right up and died as soon as I backed out to drive. I thought fuel pump or filter so I went the easiest route and changed the filter. I changed the filter , gave it the start and idle test and all was good. I then drove about 10 miles and it did the exact same thing, surged in idle and died. I checked the control module and it tested good 6 times. I am at a complete stand still and scratching my head now. it starts and idles great and Im sure it will drive but I am also sure it will idle down and die again. basically Im certain it didnt just magically fix itself. anyone have any ideas or had a similar issue? NO CODES in the computer either??

Keep it simple and replace the fuel filter first, if thr fiiler has not been replaced within 30,000 miles or 1 year. Then it's a good chance that it's going to be the fuel filter.

Hello, It sounds like an engine ignition control module gone out or a coil. They get hot and quit working after a short period of time, cool off then work again till they get hot.
Is the ignition system pointless electronic or does it have points? Are you getting any fire at all now to the cylinders? Does the tach in the vehicle show any RPM's during cranking? Do you have voltage at the positive side of the ignition coil? Does the coil meet the ohm ratings for that years vehicle ignition? Does the vehicle have oil in it so the oil pressure sensor allows the engine to run, this may not be an option on your particular vehicle? You can check most of this out with a volt/ohm meter. Check your voltages before starting the vehicle, during running and after it quits to see where the loss is. Just don't get near the center tap of the coil or you will get a rude awakening and/or serious injury. Good luck, RAC

HI, your assessment is correct. this is a fuel filter and pump issue. i would also add a fuel injector cleaner after the replacement of the fuel pump and filter. this will scrub the fuel system and clean any debris that may exist at this point. Techtron injector cleaner is the best solution when cleaning the injector system.
I would also inspect the spark plug wires for faults as well. make sure they are fitted tightly over the plugs.

came across this once before it could be the accelerator pedal cause it is sensored. just sounds like maybe something to look into sense it will start up but dies if throttled into

Try removing the idle speed motor on side of throttle body, and spray it clean, as well as the port it came out of, with throttle body spray cleaner. Don't pull and extend shaft of idle motor, just leave it in position it's in, and make sure you don't lose small "O" ring on idle motor. Re-install and try it. If it cures it for a while, then starts to do it again, replace the idle speed motor.

new cap and rotor now. I had a O2 code and replaced the O2 . crank -cam sensor correlation code so I changed the crank sensor. the distributor has about 40k on it and the crank sensor has about 194k so thats my take there. it ran great for 3 days and stuck me again.now its right after I stop some place and fire her back up it idles down non responsive to the gas and dies. I did change the fuel filter 1st for the easier cheap fix. I do have spark to my coil as well. theres a new cap and rotor installed.today I pull into a gas station shut her off come right back out and I start it up and it idles down with no response and will not start up. I wait about 10 minutes and it fires right up and gets me back home which is about 20 miles away. I turn her off at home in the driveway and it will not start for hours. this was at 330 pm and now at 845 pm it fires right back up. what gets me is it will not respond to the accelerator when pushed as this is going on. I am struck because everything costs 50-75 bucks and a fuel pump 150-200 bucks and I absolutely cant be wrong for the obvious financial reasons. OH BOY is this one a mess.
