Get under there and look to see where oil is escaping. Oil, like everything else runs downward. Therefore it may be coming from the top of the engine. If you have a 4.0, the valve covers are plastic and tend to leak a bit... Generally you can gently (or you will break them off) tighten the v/c fasteners and eliminate most if not all of the seepage. If it continues, replace the gasket. There is only one seal between trans and engine, called a rear main seal. It is better left alone. It's a big job and best done by a shop.

usually youll have an engine check light on for an emmission problem, could have damaged hose, check for fuel leak, tank, fuel lines going to motor.

shocks are generally nitrogen filled (you can't smell that)
Make sure you aren't loosing any coolant (could be the heater core beginning to leak) At the very onset, it is possible that the leak is small enough that it is either evaporating before reaching the rug or is going out the a/c drain. Also check in the engine compartment for any small leaks or seepage that may be burning off and possibly causing enough vapor to get into the engine compartment. If the problem is cooling system related adding some of the powder type system sealer will often be enough to fix that but don't load it up...one small packet is sufficient, and not enough to jam up the system.
It is tough to diagnose that sort of problem in person
online, nearly impossible but I hope I have touched on something that will help.

Hi, if your coolant level is not going down and you are not topping it up then the chances are your coolant is not leaking, if you have used the windscreen washers then it could be this you are smelling.
right now as for the oil, to be smelling this in the car then this either means you have a lead towards the top of the engine either valve cover or head gasket being the worse case, the reason you are smelling it is due to it getting on the exhaust somewhere towards the top of the engine, if it was any lower down it would not be smelt inside the car, check if you are losing oil at all if its only a slow leak you wont notice it go down so the best option would be to have the engine steam cleaned so all oil is wiped off then drive it for few days then have a good look around the top half of the engine.
if you are noticing your losing oil then check if the exhaust is blowing as this could indicate head trouble which is not likely but cant be ruled out.
i would get it steam cleaned then top the oil up to the maximum mark making sure the car is on level ground when topping up then drive it for 7 days then check the oil and see how much is lost, if its not noticable then the chances are its going to either be valve cover gasket gone or one of the rubber seals at either end of the cam these can leak from time to time and its quite a big job to replace them.
once its steam cleaned have a good look around the exhaust manifold and manifold gasket and see if any oil is running onto either of these as this is the only reason you would smell oil in the car is if it was being burned at the top of the engine, if it was lower down the smell would go out under the car and would not be smelt in the car unless you had a blowing exhaust and the windows open, so have a good check after the engine has been cleaned or if the engine is all ready clean take off some parts towards the top of the engine such as air hoses for air filter and any engine covers so you can have a good look at the top of the engine.
let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok
let me know what you find
