The car would not start right away. It made the grinding noise like when the car is already started when I tried to turn it over. I got it started but now there is a loud rattling noise underneath my cab.

I am familiar with these, a manual choke carb works off of a bimetal coil in the manifold exhaust crossover on the passenger side of the intake, Make sure it is hooked up, then while the car is cold, on the rockchester carbs, use an 1/8 in drillbit to set choke. You have to loosen the three screws on the choke to set, when the choke flap, the very top one on the carb touches the drillbit, set it there and lock down screws, pump once or twice and it should start and idle, as the bimetal coil heats up it should open the top flap. if you try to accelerate before it is wam it will disconnect from the auto choke. It sounds like you have a bad c v or constant velocity joint. Look under the car next to the wheel look for a rubber accordian type unit, if the rubber is torn or lose the grease has escaped and damaged the joint. You can replace it yourself, but if your not mechanically inclined would say take it to a shop.

If you are not buying an after market harness and all of the oem wiring is intact replace one wire at a time from the component all the way back to the fuse box. Its tedious but, it's a sure fire way to get it right the first time.
Secondly, I'd by a haynes manual or some other wiring diagram. Study it for at least a couple weeks or until you are completely comfortable taking on the task.
Color code your wires and label both the old and new ones with paper tape and a permanent marker so that you know what each one is for.
Last but not least, make sure that the battery is disconnected... ;o)

You can see the brake disc on the front wheels, Check both sides of each side, looking for scoring. Brake pads have wear insicators on them that are metal tabs that contact the rotor (disc) when pads get thin. It would be better to pull the wheels off to get a good look at the pads. Good luck
