I have a 1999 s70 t5 and the car idle's up and down after it warms up.check engine light is on,has no [power when you step on the gas,put a new mass air flow sensor on,and had it to the dealer for some computer software update's but still have the problem. Can anybody help me.
It sounds like this problems is related to the ETM, or electronic throttle module. if software download was already performed, next step is to clean the throttle body bore. ultimately, the module may need to be replaced.

Did the engine stall or did it just lose power but stay running? Did the gauges fall to "0" or idle?
Usually when something major like that happens, the check engine light will come on and there will be codes set in the computer.
I would start by checking the codes, and if at all possible, use Volvo's VIDA and DiCE interface to make sure you get the right codes. Some generic code readers can't read all the Volvo specific stuff.
That will get you closer to the actual problem.
Rule out the simple stuff. Do you have enough gas in the tank? The gas gauge might be wrong and you're empty. The ETM could be wonky and on its way out. Google "Volvo ETM" and read up - there's a sticker on it and the color of the sticker could indicate if you have the old (likely faulty) module or not.
Ignition wires - these engines are coil on plug if I remember right (they changed around those years '98 or '99) and then you check the little wires to the coils.
Yes and the way it runs.
Disconnect and plug the vacuum lines to the EGR, and see if you still have idle and driveability issues. If not replace the Valve.
hi black smoke is not good, and you say the water level is going down. im sorry to inform you may have a blown head gasket. rough running engine lite, if you have just bought the vehicle i would recommend taking it back to were you bought the vehicle.
I would have to say the fuel/water separator filter is clogged up. The filter will remove water and crud from the gas. It looks more like a small can under the car. If the car set up with a low tank of gas, water will condensate inside and once the new fuel sloshes around it gets all this junk off the walls of the tank and that gets sucked in the filter. Try and replace that first..
if you disconnect your immobilzer your car will not start at all. good chance one or more of your door latches have failed these will not let you arm or disarm your car with the remote. good way to check is get in the car and lock it do not put the key in the ignition open one door at a time if your dome light does not turn on then that will be the first place to start it is a step by step process to trace down the issue. sorry no one quick fix.
a vacuum leak can make it idle ruff so check all the vacuum hoses also if the check engine light is not (on) replace the spark plugs and the fuel filter.
These models had a problem with the electronic control modules, and this is what controls the idle speed. Sometimes they just need to be cleaned, but sometimes they are defective. Volvo has extended the warranty on some of them to 10 years or 200,000 miles if it is found to be defective.
your friend is on the right track, it does sound like it cvould be spark plugs but get the codes read as well, it is very common for coils to go out on those cars which will also give a misfire and lack of power.
Thanks to the person that helped me i did replace me etm last week and the car is runnning smooth!!
Thanks FixYa.
