Just bought this ford truck, 1991 f150 inline 6 and last night i smelt electric burn. I looked under the hood and the relay that attaches to the right fender next to the battery. I saw where a wire had burnt and broke. i saw that it went to the alternator. not sure where else it goes and what they are for and why this happened. I need see that my battery light came on and the gage went to the low end of normal. What do i do?
Reconnect the wires and electrical tape them and try it to soo if that dosen help
it may have had a bare sopt on it and it grounded out...thats what usually happens with them. after you put the wire back together check the rest of the line to see if there are any bare spots and if so tape them up tight
hopefully it didnt hurt either of them you will know when you get it all finished and start it and let it run that its ok.ill keep my fingers crossed for ya on that part

ok, but why did it burn up in the first place? and will it do it again if i connect back together and tape? The harness is the one that goes to the alternator and i noticed, i guess from it being hot, that at the connection at the alternator end was melting and some of the plastic dripped on the alternator case. So should i replace the harness? or the alternator and the harness?
thank you i will do that. Just wanted to make sure that the harness or the alternator was bad. I did notice that it must have sparked on the hood because i saw a burnt spot there too. Right above where the wire had burnt hole and then melted the rest. So, you are right. It must have had a bare spot there and it grounded at the hood. Wow. So the harness is ok and the alternator?
