1992 Chevy Lumina will not start when temp is below 0 degrees

1992 Chevy Lumina 3.1L V6

Will not start when the temperature is below 0 or more but will start and run fine when the temp rises to 15 to 20. It seems to not be getting enough gas as it fires a little but is not getting enough gas to start. It does this with gas line anti-freeze added to the gas as well. I tested the IAT (intake air temperature sensor) in a temperature chamber and it appears the resistance is within spec. What else could it be?

Try changing the fuel filter, water trapped in it can freeze. Its a 92 and probably time for a fuel pump. They don't like water either.(Meythonol Fuel) Always change fuel filter when adding antifreeze to fuel

change intake gaskets you will find it blown thats why your problem happens when your engine is warm the alum. intake warms up and expands opening the blown gasket

Since the PCM uses info gatheres from the crank and cam sensors to calculate ignition - and there are no OBD codes - in all likelihood, the PCM itself is bad.

The Ignition Module, also transmits to the PCM.

It appears after all your testing - that the PCM is at fault.

It does not error report on itself (unfortunately).

The ignition timing is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). No adjustment is necessary (distributorless ignition) or possible.

The engines covered by this manual are equipped with distributorless ignitions, ignition timing is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), as applicable. No adjustments are possible. If ignition timing is not within specification, there is a fault in the engine control system. Diagnose and repair the problem as necessary.
Ignition timing is the measurement, in degrees of crankshaft rotation, of the point at which the spark plugs fire in each of the cylinders. It is measured in degrees before or after Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.
Ideally, the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder will be ignited by the spark plug just as the piston passes TDC of the compression stroke. If this happens, the piston will be at the beginning of the power stroke just as the compressed and ignited air/fuel mixture forces the piston down and turns the crankshaft. Because it takes a fraction of a second for the spark plug to ignite the mixture in the cylinder, the spark plug must fire a little before the piston reaches TDC. Otherwise, the mixture will not be completely ignited as the piston passes TDC and the full power of the explosion will not be used by the engine.
The timing measurement is given in degrees of crankshaft rotation before the piston reaches TDC (BTDC). If the setting for the ignition timing is 10 BTDC, each spark plug must fire 10 degrees before each piston reaches TDC. This only holds true, however, when the engine is at idle speed. The combustion process must be complete by 23° ATDC to maintain proper engine performance, fuel mileage, and low emissions.
As the engine speed increases, the pistons go faster. The spark plugs have to ignite the fuel even sooner if it is to be completely ignited when the piston reaches TDC. Spark timing changes are accomplished electronically by the engine and ignition control computers.
If the ignition is set too far advanced (BTDC), the ignition and expansion of the fuel in the cylinder will occur too soon and tend to force the piston down while it is still traveling up. This causes pre ignition or -knocking and pinging-. If the ignition spark is set too far retarded, or after TDC (ATDC), the piston will have already started on its way down when the fuel is ignited. The piston will be forced down for only a portion of its travel, resulting in poor engine performance and lack of power.
Timing marks or scales can be found on the rim of the crankshaft pulley and the timing cover. The marks on the pulley correspond to the position of the piston in the No. 1 cylinder. A stroboscopic (dynamic) timing light is hooked onto the No. 1 cylinder spark plug wire (2.2L engine only, on the 2.4L engines, special adapters are needed) . Every time the spark plug fires, the timing light flashes. By aiming the light at the timing marks while the engine is running, the exact position of the piston within the cylinder can be easily read (the flash of light makes the mark on the pulley appear to be standing still). Proper timing is indicated when the mark and scale are in specified alignment.


WARNING When checking timing with the engine running, take care not to get the timing light wires tangled in the fan blades and/or drive belts.

For 1988-1995 4.3L,5.0L and 5.7L intake manifold bolts are torqued to 35ft.lbs.Start with center bolts on each side moving out finishing with the bolts in the front of the motor and the back

Sounds like you have a faulty head gasket or maybe a cracked head.This can cause overheating and the check engine light to come on.The code for the o2 sensor is probably caused by coolant getting into the exhaust system and coating the sensor.The coolant fan may work but it cannot remove enough heat from the rad to make the engine cool off.Try some engine coolant stop leak to see if it will help.This maybe only a temperary fix.Let me know if you need more.MOE

The coolant sensor temperature is usually found just beneath the cylinder head, on the engine block.

You just disconnect the 1-2 wires and then undo it with a wrench.

Just be aware .. you may have TWO such sensors on your vehicle.

One sensor (usually with 3-4 electrical pins) is near the thermostat and works in conjunction with other sensors to regulate fuel/air according to engine temperature.

The other type of sensor is in the block near the cylinder head. It sends a signal to the temperature gauge on your dashboard ONLY. If your temp gauge constantly reads too hot or too cold .. this one is the culprit.25939754-r0ibht2u2t2rhetbyfvb2pry-5-0.jpg

This year doen't use a separate sensor for the cooling fans, it uses the ECT (engine coolant temp sensor) sensor that monitors engine temperature for the fuel control system, the computer turns the fans (via a relay) on when the engine reaches about 225-230 Degrees F

You need to repair the low coolant condition before any more diagnosis. If the coolant in the radiator is low that's what the light is telling you. You may have a coolant leak. fix that first then make sure the cooling system is full. Use coolant (50/50) not water.

Where are the temperature sending units located in a 1992 Buick Century

On the 2.5 4cyl. The temp. sensor is located on the
transmission side of the engine below the coolant outlet. The temp sending unit is in the head in front of
the coolant outlet. On the 3.3 v6 the temp sensor is on the right side of the engine below the alternator.
The temp sending unit is to the left of the sensor.

My chevy lumina starts but once it warms up it dies and wont start changed coils and module what else could it be?

you probably have a faulty temperature censor. if the car stalls when its hot and acts like its running out of gas than its the temp censor. what this censor does is it will tell the main computer what to make the air fuel mixture and if its telling the computer (ECM) that the car is too rich than it will lean the air fuel mixture so far that it will cause the car to stall.
