Go to autozone or similar and have vehicle scanned for codes. This will give you a idea what's wrong.

SOURCE: 99 Subaru forester s/tb type A

You want to change from a standard transmission to an automatic transmission? You need a new transmission, clutch, gearshift, shift linkage just to start. You will be money ahead selling the car you have and buying one with an automatic.

SOURCE: Engine make Knocking noise when cold

I have the same problem on my 2.0L 2001 Legacy auto. It began about 1000 miles ago. It has now done 84k. From my online searches this is most probably 'piston slap', and is not serious. To save weight Subaru shaved down the skirts on the pistons. With normal engine wear the pistons will at some point rattle against the cylinders until the engine is heated up and the pistons expand. The rattling should go away after a few minutes. If it persists say 10-15 minutes, it may be another problem.

SOURCE: I replaced the battery, now the car will not idol

My friend, I dont know what is wrong but I would be surprised if it is battery caused. Something has corrupted your computer. You may need a professional to check this problem out.

Idle is what an engine does.

Idol is what you watch on NBC.

1999 Subaru Forester check engine light on.

Take it to your parts store and have the code read. They make those lights for a reason...helps you identify the system failure

Rough idle, cruise control also stopped working

Sounds like you could have gotten some water in your fuel tank from that fill up. Go to a autoparts store and get a product to put in the tank that takes care of water in fuel. Use it when you fill the tank up a few times after and hopefully it goes away. Whenever you can't sustain power in the engine or it runs rough then your cruise control will constantly be shut off because the engine doesn't have the power to keep the speed up and should go away once your engine is running clean again.

Overheating.

One thing to do, would be check the condition of your rad hoses. Not uncommon for them to be fine at certain speeds, but soft enough to collapse & restrict flow at higher speeds.

'99 Forester with a knocking noise at idle and acceleration

sounds like you have a headgasket blown, a head, or your rocker arms or lifters whatever you prefer to call them are running dry. might be time for oil change and coolant flush. If ther is no overheating or coolant smell than get your injectors checked. You might just have a broken seal that emits louder sound from the pulsating injectors. Good Luck!

1998 Subaru Forester

Would need to know more. Did the 'check engine' light come on about the time you first noticed this happening? If so, have the code checked for diagnosis. I would suspect FUEL TRIM error (or similar) in the computer compensating the fuel injection when the car is put in gear versus in Park or Neutral when cold.

97 tahoe bad miss when ideling

For a larger engine, they could still be missing but you won't notice it once it is turning above the idle speed.
For both of you, I would suggest you check under the hood in the darkest area you can find and with the under-hood light disconnected if you have one, for sparks along the sparkplug and distributor leads.
I had to replace all of them after only four years on my lousy GM vehicle.
For jancsi; check for a drive belt that is close to failing. Your problem sounds like a water pump that isn't being turned as it should. That's why the heater works when you rev the engine, the slippage is less significant once the RPMs are higher.
