Bad catalytic converter on 2000 Monte Carlo SS

Went & purchased gas, and as soon as I left the gas station, my check engine light came on. My son put his tester on it, gave him the code that it's going bad. When I drive it, it feels like I am towing another car. I need to do this myself, as I can;t afford to take it to a mechanic. Please help with schematics. Thank you!

SOURCE: 02 monte carlo- EVAP code.

hi there, you see todays cars are so emmision friendly that not even the vapors from your tank can be released into the atmosphere so what they have done is all your vapors are put into a charcoal canister to absorb the vapors and the next time you start the car it has a purge solenoid open and burn the vapors off. if you look around the intake youll see a hose with a green cap follow it back to the charcoal canister and while your doing that just check the hoses and the hoses around the canister to make sure there is no holes or cracks in them and then follow the hose from the canister to the gas tank. if every thing looks good then i would replace the purge solenoid.

SOURCE: P01420 Code - 2001 Toyota Camary

Have had similiar problem w. 2002 Highlander.
It happens when the airfilter comparment is touched, moved or opened. The hose attachment comes lose and the engine light comes on. Attached hose to airfilter casing a little tighter and the light will eventually go off. Takes about 2 weeks to go off.

SOURCE: 2000 monte carlo ss 3800

3800's are really good motors, but that's a sign of fuel injector problems. I've seen this all to many times. Run some injector cleaner through it and see if cleans up.

One question however, does it stall out and have a problem restarting? Black smoke out of the exhaust? This is sign of an EGR valve problem that may be fixable simply with a nice cleaning.

I'd try the injector cleaner first, and if it continues, go onto the EGR valve. If this shows no problem, it may be a good time to take the car to a mechanic and have the injectors tested. They may be failing but not giving out a fault indicator.

you will need to drive about 50 miles till the computer checks the system since it was reset. Your check engine light may come back again, if it does run a vacum test..

Replaced Egr sensor on 2003 monte carlo but check engine light is still on throwing same code?

Inefficient air flow can be from the catalytic converter clogging up. This is the most likely cause. Soon you will have 02 codes

I have a 2001 monte carlo ss if the catalyst efficiency is bad how would my car perform? will it not just start or what?

Unless the catalytic converter is restricted or plugged you probably won't notice any change in performance or starting. The check engine light might be on.

2000 Monte Carlo SS (89,000 mi)

That slushy brown stuff is signs of a blown head gasket. Have a code scanner hooked up to find out why the light is on, it will probably show coolant temperature sensor. Just out of curiosity, check the pvc valve (if your car has one), and see if it's clogged. If it is replace it, the crank case is not getting ventilated.
