Brake fluid leaking heavily when applying brakes

Brakes were acting up. pretty much putting pedal to the floor just to stop. then the parking brake light came on. Stopped at auto parts store checked brake fluid, was pretty empty so I bought a bottle of brake fluid. filled reservoir. drove about a mile brakes seemed fine. parked car for a few hours. Upon driving car next time, the brakes went back to acting up. then light came back on, added more fluid so that I could make trip back home. about 10 miles into ride home light came back on. When I got home and pulled in the driveway I pumped the brakes about 10 times and backed it up there was a puddle of brake fluid on the driveway. What causes this? just a cracked brake line? or master Cylinder?

SOURCE: the checj engine light on my 99 pontiac sunfire

first of all, was the water on the passenger side from the air conditioner or a leak (what color was the fluid?)-the cap has to be tight, otherwise it will not hold pressure, so that has to be checked before you set off again-push down as you turn the cap clockwise, and it will not hurt to have water in the system (it actually transfers heat better than antifreeze) but it has a much lower boiling point, so the cap has to be tight. Pay attention to the temperature gauge and do NOT overheat it-it is an aluminum engine and they do not tolerate excessive heat. Take your time, no AC (although the AC being on can keep a good cooling system more stable since the radiator fan is forced on when the AC is running, so you can, within reason, experiment)-no matter what, just don't let it run hot-not worth it.

SOURCE: Brake & ABS Warning LIght

There is a known failure of the ABS system control board which typically causes this problem. THere are companies out there that will rebuild your current board (if it's rebuildable). Do a search on ABS repair in Moscow, Iowa.

They will rebuild the module for $150.00 and warrant the repair for 5 years (as opposed to up to a $1000 form GM, and no guarantee as to how ling it will last.).

I did this to my '01 Tahoe and am real happy with it. The company offers diagnosis tests to help you determine if the problem is your ABS module.

Reply back what you find.

Handbrake light comes on when pumping brakes and pedal becomes hard, the vehicle does not stop. Replaced master cylinder and bled brakes

Hi Anton It would help to know what vehicle you have.
are you sure its the hand brake light and not the brake fluid level light? It may be they are using the same light for both.
I am assuming the brake pedal goes to the floor if you don't pump it? This is really an open question without knowing the history or seeing your vehicle. Things that may create this fault,
brake pedal spongy or goes to floor (1) Leak of fluid in system, air in system, Incorrectly adjusted brakes, Flexible brake hoses porous brake pressure applied hoses expand. Leaky wheel cylinder or calliper. Badly worn brake pads or brake shoes. Leaky brake booster (brake servo) You need to methodically go through each of these possible faults and rule each one out. Good luck

2005 chevy duramax 4x4 brake pedal goes all the way to the floor, ABS light on

You need to add BRAKE fluid. After that, blead your brakes. You need to find out where the brake fluid went. If there are no leaks, you need to check the remaining life on all four brake sets. If you have no leaks, chances are pretty good that you need new brakes.

99 ford explorer brake pedal goes to floor. Booster or master cyl. ?

Not likely that the booster is an issue. The booster would not be able to overcome the brake fluid compression.
First open and inspect all brakes for leaks, adjustment, etc. Check all brake lines.
So if no leaks, did the fluid go low in the MC? If so, pad consumption would eat more than a MC reservoir of fluid, and not require MC replacement, but rebleeding and top up of fluid. If the pads are worn, and you replace them, often this will expel air back through the MC.

If you determine the MC is faulty, bench bleed the new one before install, or you will have lots of problems getting air out....

My 03 kia rio automatic the brake pedal goes to the floor almost and dont wanna stop but the brakes are pretty new the brake light on the dash is remaining on as well

Either the brake lines need to be bled, or brake fluid is very low. Maybe on the last brake servicing, a leak developed. Are there signs of fluid loss, such a spot on the floor, or stained wheels?

Brake pedal goes down to floor. Putting brake fluid doesn't solve problem. Vehicle must coast to a complete stop.

First look for obvious leaks under the vehicle, especially the inside area of each wheel... If you see fluid, you have either a blown cylinder seal or a bad line (check the rubber hoses to the front and back brakes too) Repair the offending part and bleed the air out of the system... (remember to clean pads or shoes if they have fluid on them)... If you see no hint of leakage anywhere, then suspect the master cylinder... if you remove the master cylinder, check and make sure that it didn't leak fluid into the brake booster diaphragm (Brake fluid will destroy the booster)... as in any repair when you open the system (lose fluid), you will need to bleed out the air to restore function... hope this helps...;-)
