I drive a vw jetta 2003 gls 1.8t. a few days ago the engine dash light started blinking. the car was hard to drive, accelerating with difficulty and shook when stopped. we took it in for repair, they changed the ignition coils, spark plugs, changed the oil and worked on the fuel system. 24 hours later, we have the same problem! the engine light started blinking again and the same driving issues. I took my 2003 VW Jetta in 2 times b/c the check engine light kept coming on. They said it was fine, just a sensor. Well now when you start the car it shakes and the check engine light flashes. I read in the owner's manual that it could be the catalytic converter. I'm too scared to drive so, I'm having it towed tonight. Hopefully I will find out tomorrow what the problem is. I will keep you posted.

I have had the same problem as of yesterday.  Not too sure what is going on.

2006 VW Jetta 2.5L, started engine in the morning at -15 c last week, idle speed around 500 rpm and unstable, car shake and black smoke from exhaust pipe. depress accelerator, everything back to normal. Started engine at -5 c, idle speed about 1000 rpm, still unstable, but it's fine soon. Driving in local and highway like before.
Could you advise what the problem is?and how to fix it.
    Never replaced spark plugs.

    Thank you so much

I had the same symptoms and found I had suffered from turbo failure and the final cost at the dealer was $3500, last VW I will ever own. I hope this isn't your trouble too, good luck

I have a 2000 vw jetta vr6 gls 2.8 and it sounds like it is misfiring but the check engine lights is not on. When I accelerate it sounds like im driving a lawn mower. What could it be?

The check eng light does not always come on when theres an issue. Take it and have it scanned anyway, I bet there is a code stored, Also ask them to check Pending codes. Pending codes are what the computer has noticed a possible concern and is watching That system, Pending codes can be saviours when diagnosing a hard to find issue

My 97 vw jetta won't start when it rains

I would check your spark plug wires, when it's been dry out, start the car and with a spray bottle, spray the plug wires and see if there is any difference, also the coil wire. The smell is most likely from the catalytic converter. Any check engine light?

Struggling to Accelerate immediately after starting engine

Most likely there is a hole in the air tube. Open the hood and check the rubber tube on top of the engine. If there is a rip, just cover it with some heavy duty tape and it will help on a tempory basis.

2003 VW Jetta TDI Check Engine Light Issue

Try disconnecting the battery (unhook on of the terminals) wait for like 15 mins, hook the terminal once again and start the car. I also own a 2003 Jetta and once my engine light would come on after 2 mins of driving. Disconnecting the battery is like resetting the computer and hopefully the sensor.

I have a 2003 VW jetta tdi

You've lost engine coolant somewhere, and need to fill the engine back up with the VW special G12 coolant.

Then find the leak, which will be in one or more of the following places -
Water hoses to heater core, including any other coolant carrying hoses in the engine compartment
Radiator hoses
Plastic manifold bolted to side of engine which is known to leak (have replaced on an '01 VW Beetle, and an '02 Jetta, both members of our family in the past few years.).
Overflow reservoir cracked
Radiator leak.

Reply back what you find. If the engine got too hot, you may need to have the thermostat replaced.

Guys, what you are experiencing is the car built warning system. When your engine light blinks it indicates a Major Problem has occurred or is occurring in the engine. When this occurs the cars goes into a "safe," mode which means all power is cut by at least half in an effort to save the car from more major damage. You can take your VW to any large chain autoparts store (autozone, advance, etc) a lot of them are offering a free engine diagnosis. Do this if possible to see where the problems maybe coming from and ways to fix them.
