On cold mornings (cold is about 30-40 degrees) the engine will start and immediately idle very low, then stall. I have to keep my foot on the pedal to keep the engine running. can't seem to idle when cold. only after about 15-20 mins hard driving (like on the freeway) will it warm up enough to idle
and not stall at stop lights, etc. once warm it seems to idle ok, except that during mid-day driving the engine idles very high (2-2500 rpm) and the opposite problem occurs and at stops I have to apply the brakes much harder to hold back the engine.
I had the same issue on my 99 Trooper.
It would usually start when completely cold, but idle around 2k RPM.
It would drive fine. But if I shut it down, ran into a store, and came back out, it would start but immediately idle.
Had to ride the gas a little to get it into gear.
The Check Engine light has been going on and off for 6 months or so.
I took this to my local trusted repair shop (no Isuzu dealers within 200 miles).
The diagnosed the light, and found that the Intake Gaskets were bad or leaking.
The idling problem was related to the car not being able to control the amount of air coming in.
They replaced the Intake gaskets by the next day, and I haven't had a problem since. And no more check engine light, which has been on half a year.
Here's some details from my bill:
(1) Intake Gasket set $107.95
Misc materials $21.00
2.1 hours of Labor
The total cost to me was $345.00, and I definately don't feel gipped.
Two weeks ago I changed my intake manifold gaskets and
cleaned my EGR and PCV. Haven’t had a
problem since. My gaskets were three
years old and were not plastic, they were some kind of sandwiched gasket. I rebuilt the motor three years ago and I had
extra gaskets left over so I was able to pull them out and find that I had used
McCord. The new ones I got from AutoZone
are the plastic type made by FelPRo and I get the feeling they will not last as
long as the McCord
5 gallon of petrol and a match. soon sort it.

I have the same problem but mine is on 1999 Isuzu Trooper
i have same issue. 1999 3.5L
Same thing for me. 99 Trooper.
Seems to idle fine (though at about 2000 rpms) if it is started when cold. If I stop at a store or something for 20 minutes and start the car back up, it starts, but immediately stalls.
When this is happening, the Check Engine light is constantly blinking.
