Problem happened suddenly five days ago. no check engine light. Autozone diagnostic shows no codes. Car will start and idle at 500 RPM - feels choked. Driving on level eventually gets to 40 MPH - if press accelerator too long, engine will sputter and choke out. Any uphill travel and car will lose speed dramatically.
Have you checked the air inlet sensor on the air filter. If this fails the engine goes into safety mode which it seems has happened. I don't know the specifics of the Santa fe but this is a feature of most modern electronic engine systems.

I had the same issue and to be honest i spent a packet looking i bought a new Mass air flow meter, Now o2 sensor, in the end it turned out for me there was a small Crack in the manifold which was causing the car to lose back pressure. this was the last thing i was expecting. After this happened the car ran great for a little while then is started going funny again with rev counter jumping and turned out one of the COIL packs was failing causing a miss fire but it was not noticeable when idling only under load.

Check engine light went on - p0134 according to Autozone diag. Can someone tell me where the heated oxygen sensor(s) is/are?
found and replaced the oxygen sensor - check engine light is out but original problem remains. Before I cleared the codes the first time, there were a p0441 and p0446 posted - could this be the root cause of my problem?
Solution to problem - the front catalytic converter had collapsed and was almost completely blocking the exhaust. In the 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, the front catalytic converter is in the bottom of the exhaust manifold. I took the car to a local shop, who correctly diagnosed and fixed the problem in one day.
