What kind of car is this? how old is it,most trannys go because NOBODY seems to change the fluid .I would change it every 50k,after ten years of no new fluid . You could try changing it and add a bottle of Lucas trans slip fluid with it, I have used it with at least 4 differant vehecles with success. But check you trans kick down cable first ,if it broke the car will not shift,Located right with throttle cable, one on top and the other right under it .

Transmission won't shift out of 1st and service engine light comes on. goes in reverse and park. goes in drive , just will not shift.

Hi Cindy, As the engine check light is coming it is indicating a problem. Have a diagnostic scan carried out and let your technician determine the actual fault. It could be something to do with the state of engine tune or a defective speed sensor, but may also be a problem with the gearbox. Regards John

Car jerks when you shift gears

If that oil is transmission fluid, you may be low on fluid. That would cause harsh shifts. Make sure your transmission is full.
Is it just reverse and drive that ****? Do second and third shift smooth? If so, you may have a too-high idle.
If idle is good, and your transmission didn't get low on fluid, then I would suggest you drain and refill the transmission, and install a new transmission filter while you have the bottom pan off. Usually, you can buy a filter and pan gasket as a kit.

I have a F250 lariat with a 460 - truck stalls when I put it in gear - even after it runs for 20 min. Sometimes it will stall while I'm driving. I had carborator replaced last year. Hope you can help.

Some possible causes could be:

Vacuum leaks cause an engine to run lean witch can cause the vehicle to stall when put into gear.

Improper base idle adjustment can cause the vehicle to stall when shifted into drive or reverse

A malfunctioning or damaged carburetor can cause the vehicle to stall when shifted into drive or reverse

Improper ignition timing can cause the vehicle to stall when shifted into drive or reverse.

A malfunctioning or damaged transmission or torque converter can cause the vehicle to stall when shifted into drive or reverse
