My steering is loose turning left but when you turn right it is tight

When turning to the left there is a lot of play and you have to turn the wheel almost completely for the car to turn but when I turn to the right it is tight and turns on a dime.

SOURCE: Turning the steering wheel right or left I hear a

This could be alot of differant things and is hard to narrow down. First I would check the wheel bearings. If those arent bad then I would next check the struts, more so the strut bearings, wich tend to go bad before the struts.

SOURCE: when turning steering wheel to left very hard to turn

Sounds like the begining of a bad rack n pinion. We can eliminate the pump because the car turns to the right fine. There is no loss of fluid? The only thing left is the rack. It is a fairly commin issue. Use to call it morning sickness, The cars would be hard to turn in the morning or when first started but after running and warming up for a while they would start to work properly.

S2554. Why is there play in the stirring wheel?

Hi Scott:
I checked some online pics and manuals. There's a ton of detail there.
The main reason that there is a lot of play in the steering is that most small tractors are built very economically, and the simplest effective steering is typically geared quadrants connected to linkages. They inherently have a lot of slack.
I'd recommend that you do a "maintenance inspection" by checking all of the parts; Wiggle and jiggle and make sure there are no loose nuts except the person turning the steering wheel.
Cheers!

Check steering wheel nut is tight, sometimes it may run loose. If it is tighten to specs and is still happening, splines may be worn on steering wheel.

Rack pinion

There is one adjustment to the steering gear, but this doesn't remove very much play in the steering. And once set, I have never seen them back off ( it's the big nut on the back of the rack, break it loose, then turn the inner nut, Just a little through. You get it to tight and it will be hard to turn). If you have a lot of play, look at the tierod ends, inner and out. There are also two universal joints on the steering shaft that could cause a lot of play. One by the rack and one under the dash. There are bushings/bearing that hold the steering shaft in place, These don't cause much left or right play, they will cause the steering wheel to be sloppy at the column.

What is causeing loose play in my steeringwheel when i turn it left or right?

If there is no shaking or clunking you can probably rule out tie rods or ball joints, have your steering box checked for a worn or damaged worm gear, this can be adjusted

It starts to swerve to the left or right without turning the wheels almost like your swerving back and forth

sounds as though you have play in steering gear box- most of the time thier is a lock nut on top with a slotted screw in middle loosen lock nut and tighten screw then reset lock nut. do not over tighten slotted screw in fact tighten and then back off half turn so steering box is not too tight.

Need to tighten loose steering wheel

You mean the steering wheel is rocking back and forth? I hope, because if it is slipping left and right, it is not the wheel but the steering control arm, Or something else down under the car. To get to the wheel, take off the horn, I don't think you have airbags, a couple screws in the back should do it, then get to the nut, torque that thing up, you should be all set. Hope this helps.

2007 chevy silverado steering shudder over bumps

Are the wheel lug nuts tight? Jack up the front end and wiggle each wheel to check for loose wheel bearings. If the truck has a lot of miles, the upper and especially the lower ball joints may be worn enough to cause problems. With the wheels back on the ground, have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth slowly while you watch each tie rod end for looseness. If the left wheel moves before the right one does, there is play somewhere in the linkage between the wheels.

87 chevy nova loose steering

Sound like it needs some steering parts, you need to jack it up and check the state of the steering components, if you have that much play in the steering wheel you could be flirting with disaster if you don't deal with it soon. If you are unsure of what to check , get it into the shop.
otherwise you need to check the steering box, tie rod ends, idler and pitman arms, ball joints etc.

Hope this is of some help.
