2005 A4 Transmission disengage on acceleration

I have had intermittent trouble--when I try to accelerate, the transmission drops out of gear (that's what it feels like).  I lose all drive power, though the engine is still on.  I pump the accelerator several times, the tachometer revs, and then the drive power kicks back in.  I might happen once in two weeks, or 6 times in 2 days.   It is nothing I can reproduce or predict.
I have taken it to Audi twice and they can't seem to find it. They replaced the transmission controller in May but can't find any concrete correllation.  Can anyone suggest where to tell the techs to look?

Transmission disengaged (as if I had put it in neutral) while driving freeway speed. Tried to accelerate and got nothing but engine RPMs.

Unfortunately it sounds like your automatic transmission clutches are worn out but old and dirty oil can also cause this along with a blocked transmission filter, transmission service might get you out of trouble but a transmission specialist would be advisable.

Bad transmmision

How do you know it's bad? There's a lot of things that can happen that will cause the transmission to behave in ways it shouldn't. Is it automatic? If it's not shifting right, it could be a number of things. Is it a manual? There could be a lot of things that cause trouble there. Post more info on what it is and how it's supposedly bad, and we can go from there.
