SOURCE: transmission won't shift into 3rd

the trans has a serious failure, that is why the metal, it can be overhauled for less than a replacement

Glad too hear your making progress, sounds like your dealing with a reasonable shop too. For future reference, take notes when your vehicle acts up. The more information you cn give your technician the easier it is to be fixed. Good luck, let me know how you make out.

SOURCE: 03 dodge caravan, 105,000 miles,

I'm afraid that the transmission's O/D solenoid malfunctioning or kick down cable may be misadjusted if so equipped.

looking at a rebuilt transmission if you plan to keep the Caravan.

Or, alternatively, could get a low mileage transmission from a salvage yard and have it installed.

Servos/Accumulators The servos are hydraulic pistons and cylinders. They resemble the hydraulic actuators used on many other machines, such as bulldozers. Hydraulic fluid enters the cylinder, under pressure, and forces the piston to move to engage the band or clutches.
Servo operation tccs7015.gif

The accumulators are used to cushion the engagement of the servos. The transmission fluid must pass through the accumulator on the way to the servo. The accumulator housing contains a thin piston, which is sprung away from the discharge passage of the accumulator. When fluid passes through the accumulator on the way to the servo, it must move the piston against spring pressure, and this action smoothes out the action of the servo.
Hydraulic Control System The hydraulic pressure used to operate the servos comes from the main transmission oil pump. This fluid is channeled to the various servos through the shift valves. There is generally a manual shift valve, which is operated by the transmission selector lever, and a shift valve for each up shift the transmission provides.
Most automatic transmissions are electronically controlled; electrical solenoids are used to control the hydraulic fluid. The shift solenoids are regulated by an electronic control module. Shift timing is regulated through sensor feedback information provided to the electronic controller.
On older transmissions there are two pressures that control the shift valves. One is the governor pressure which is affected by vehicle speed. The other is the modulator pressure which is affected by intake manifold vacuum or throttle position. Governor pressure rises with an increase in vehicle speed, and modulator pressure rises as the throttle is opened wider. By responding to these two pressures, the shift valves cause the up shift points to be delayed with increased throttle opening to make the best use of the engine's power output.
Older transmissions also make use of an auxiliary circuit for downshifting. This circuit may be actuated by the throttle linkage, vacuum that actuates the modulator, or by a cable or solenoid. It applies pressure to the downshift surface on the shift valve or valves.
The transmission modulator also governs the line pressure, used to actuate the servos. In this way, the clutches and bands will be actuated with a force matching the torque output of the engine.

Good Evening, I have a dumb question. have you cleared any current or history codes in the transmission? They will default with codes in the system. Also make note on what they are. If any and we can go from there, and yes tcm would be the next place to go but more info is best as far as codes and such.

4 cyl. Auto trans. in limp mode. takin the shift solenoid out to re build it i fnd ripped wires. My question may seem should i re connect the first or cont with the shift solenoi

Unfortunately, you should have gotten the diagnostic codes for the transmission before messing with the shift solenoid. Most of those dodge shift issues are caused by input and output speed sensors.

1996 Dodge Caravan won't shift from 2nd to 3rd. Possibly in limp-in mode. What are the possible problems from the most to least likely?

Anything from a bad speed sensor( least expensive item to replace) to a bad transmission and or torque converter can cause limp mode.If you could have codes pulled and even better have someone with a real scan tool tell me what the CVI values are i can tell you exactly whats wrong with it.The CVI values are clutch pack clearances the computer calculates because of the addaptive shift software.Most aftermarket scan tools(not code pullers) are capable of this.

2001 dodge grand caravan will not shift gears. What could be the problem and how much will it cost to fix?

might be in limp in mode.check fluid level.if fluid level is ok unhook battery for 30 seconds then recrank vehicle.if it does not shift gears or does shift a few times then quits again would suggest letting a transmission expert look at it as you might have a sensor problem or a leak internally.

My 2.4 caravan is not shiffing to 3and 4 geer and the oil light keeps coming on i alread ghanged the oil two times.the van runs grate if I dont go over 40.

your transmission is in "limp mode"
it will not up shift because there is a problem with one of three sensors,
1=input sensor
2=output sensor
3=speed sensor
the computer won't let the transmission up shift because it doesn't know how fast you are going ,

I own a 1992 Dodge Caravan and somtimes it goes into second gear

You need to have a shop scan the TCM for codes. Then you can determine what is wrong. These are good for having bad turbine shaft and output shaft speed sensors.

Down shifts hard

I suggest you replace the inpurt speed sensor on your transmission and it should fix your problem. When the input speed sensor goes then the 2-1 shift gets hard cause the rpms get low and the sensor gives the computer bad info. I see it alot with cheap sensors that use ground/powdered metal as their "magnet" rather than an actual magnet and it loses the magnetism and starts to become intermitantly faulty.
