2004 Ford Focus SVT. Only starts when I pump the gas pedal, which is odd since its fuel injected not carburated. Runs for a short time, then chokes off completely. Wont start unless I let it sit for awhile. Also gas fume smell coming from coolant resevoir when I release its pressure. Noticed it when I was topping off the coolant. Very confused.

Could it possibly be that there is an aftermarket BOSS chip installed? I appreciate your info. Thank you. I will also check to see if it is the manifold gasket as well.

    Sorry, I meant intake gasket.

you may also check the fuel pump psi and fuel regulator it is possable that the map senser is bad but that should set off a engine code

  • Anonymous Oct 31, 2012

Cool cool. Thanks again for the tips. It boggled me as well because the service engine light hasnt came on. plus I didnt get any codes. I will run it again to see if any codes come up. I will get back to you and let you know.

SOURCE: 1998 Chevy tahoe Hard to start when cold

Hello, yes the check valve is in the fuel pump assembly. The check valve is leaking and the pump will burn out soon. Unfortunately the aftermarket fuel pumps can be very unreliable. A good portion of problems we see on this site are from people who replace the pump sometimes twice and it still doesn't work.

replace your MAP sensor(manifold absolute pressure) the map sensor is the computer for your fuel pressure regulator telling how much pressure. Unless your tahoe runs like **** going up hill than it inevitably your fuel pump

SOURCE: Ford Focus Deisel chokes on acceleration

Hi mate.

This sounds like a fuel problem.

Some one may have have filled up with petrol. If so you will have to drain the feul tank and change your feul filter.

If only diesel has been put into the tank then carry on as follows until you solve the problem.

Change your fuel filter and air cleaner for a start.

Check your timing.

If you still have the problem, then have your injectors cleaned and reset.

If the problem is still there then you will have to have the fuel pump reconditioned.

You can also check your leak off pipes between the injectors to see if they are in good condition.

I trust this will help you.

If the problem is not a vac leak, it could be the idle circuit inside the carb. You may have to replace or rebuild the carb to fix it.

1998 Ford Escort Se 2000cc SOHC will difficultly start the first time then has to set 30 - 40 minutes before it will start again

Holding the gas pedal to the floor will cause the PCM to put the fuel injection system into clear flood mode , cutting the amout of fuel going into the engine . Pumping or pushing on the gas pedal while cranking the engine over does nothing but allow more air into the engine , it's not giving it more gas . The computer has a set program it follows at start up . It's not like a carburetor ! Fuel pressure regulator .

If it is carburator it sounds like sticking choke,

1975 Datsun (ie. mechanical fuel pump). Carburettor, electrics (inc. battery all good) fuel strainer all good. On cold start engine needs to be cranked several times. Warm start is invariably immediate. ...

Carburated vehicles ether have an automatic choke, or the very old ones, a hand choke. Yours has an automatic choke. The starting problem likely is a problem with the choke. The problem is almost certainly not the fuel pump.To set the automatic choke, push the accelerator to the floor, and RELEASE. Then start the engine just like you would a fuel injected vehicle. If this doesn't solve the problem, then the automatic choke needs to be repaired.

I don't here a humming when key is turned on. Electric fuel pump ?? When I pump gas pedal it some times starts after it sits a while.

Could be a fuel pump although they normally only hum very briefly and change to a clicking sound that means they are maintaining fuel line pressure that was built up quickly when the ignition is turned on.
BTW; pumping the gas pedal is a good way to flood the engine; if the choke is still operational, pressing the pedal once to the floor and then releasing it should set the choke and enrich the air-fuel mix for starting. If the engine get flood, holding the gas pedal to the floor will help dry out the plugs so they can fire again.

Ran out of gas,put gas in car still wont start should i put gas in carburator?

it doesnt have a carb its fuel injected so the pump may have gone out the fuel is also coolant for the fuel pump if its below 1/4 tank the pump doesnt cool off as well so if it was empty enough times you probably ruined the fuel pump

2001 ford focus jerks when gas applied while driving

Safely, take your car on a highway or street ( dry pavement ) with no cars or other persons around. Stop the car, proceed to approx. 20 Km/h. Then push the gas pedal down close to the floor, if the car bucks and chucks change the fuel filter and retest. If the problem is still present, I recommend the fuel pump. Have it checked first.
