I have a 99 escort zx2 with an idling issue. I know this is common with some of these vehicles. I had a 1998 and never experienced this problem. Was a great car and sold it when it hi 450k. I'm thinking it may be the VCT solenoid. This is a very expensive fix. Can it be cleaned?

VCT solenoid ????? IAC - idle air control valve . YOUR Vehicle has an IAC valve . Your vehicle does not have a VCT solenoid Variable Cam Timing
Variable Camshaft Timing is an automobile variable valve timing technology developed by Ford. It allows for more optimum engine performance, reduced emissions, and increased fuel efficiency compared to engines with fixed camshafts. It uses electronically controlled hydraulic valves that direct high pressure engine oil into the camshaft phaser cavity. These oil control solenoids are bolted into the cylinder heads towards the front of the engine near the camshaft phasers. The powertrain control module transmits a signal to the solenoids to move a valve spool that regulates the flow of oil to the phaser cavity. The phaser cavity changes the valve timing by rotating the camshaft slightly from its initial orientation, which results in the camshaft timing being advanced or retarded. The PCM adjusts the camshaft timing depending on factors such as engine load and RPM.

Yes, All the years of the ZX2 utilize the same engine. 1998-2003 are all the same except for ECU programing and the MAF wiring. You should not have a problem.

SOURCE: where can i find the timing marks on 1998 ford escort zx2 ?

Hello pamgolmon: My name is Roger and i will answer your question. The 2-0 dual cam engine is a interference engine. This means if the engine jumps time at the timing belt. It will bend the valves. As for the timing marks on the camshafts. Their are no marks to be located. To set the timing marks on this engine requires special tools. This makes it expensive for not only the do it yourself mechanic but also the repair shops also. If the valves were bent you must pull the head for the repairs also.
I know this is not the answer you were hoping for but it is the only answer to give. Please rate the quality of the answer as this way we know your answer was correct. Please just ask if you need further help. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

I need to adjust my clutch on a 1998 ford zx2

Your vehicle has a hydraulic clutch, and there really is no "adjustment." Verify fluid level in the clutch fluid reservoir, and consider replacing clutch plates if you are experiencing slipping.

My 2001 Escort, 70k runs great but a definate vibration at the steering wheel. I notice it more when cold andwhen it warms up it is not as bad but still noticable vibration at the steering wheel. ...

That mechanic wasn't lying. I currently own three of them and I know a lot of people that own them and they all have a rough idle. The engines are internally balanced and they don't have dampeners, so you get the engine vibration transferred to the car and that is what you are feeling.

1998 Ford Escort ZX2 lost power/shakes

The fuel filter should be replaced every 2 years. It is easy to do since it is on the firewall. You don't even have to get under the car. Low fuel pressure can cause the issues you described. A dirty air filter can do this as well as bad spark plug wires. These cars are picky about the type of spark plugs you use as well. None of the gimming (+2, +4, splitfire) plugs should be used. I've had best luck with Motorcraft and Autolite plugs.

99 Ford zx2 wont idle after i degreased the engine.

I would start with a compressoin check. You should get more then 160 psi on each cylinder on a cold engine. If these numbers are low, then the timing belt is your likely issue. Since these engines are non-interference (don't let anyone tell you different) you can just put a new belt and pulley kit on and be done with it. I even have a how-to for this in my tips and tricks on my profile.

A bad MAF (mass air flow) sensor can cause rough running problems. This is easily tested by unplugging the MAF (4 or 6 wire plug) from the vehicle to see if running improves. The connector for the MAF can be found on the front of the airbox just after the air filter locking ring.

If that isn't the issue, a fuel pressure test is an order. You should see around 45 psi with the engine at idle and 60 psi with the engine off and key on.

I have a 99 Ford escort zx2 and the enigne quit while is was driv

This is a common problem for a crankshaft sensor failure. When it fails, the engine can not start since the ECM doesn't know the proper position of the crankshaft to give ignition according to TDC (top dead Center). Therefore it doesn't matter how strong your battery is, it won't fire. The fire is only happens when an ignition happens at the highest compression point when a piston is at top and this is reported by the crankshaft sensor. Have this checked out and replaced. Good luck.
