My 2004 Audi A6 started making a deep rattling sound in November, 2008. I took it to a highly trusted Audi certified mechanic (not the dealership) in December. He said the camshaft is worn down (and that this is a common problem with these engines) and has to be replaced. The cost will be around $6,000. Here is some additional background information: all the service work was done by the local Audi dealership (located quite a distance away from me) until the warranty ended in the summer of 2008 at 50,000 miles. The car, as of today, has 63,000 miles on it. The local Audi dealership mechanic, when I brought the car into them for it's first regular service appointment, told me Audi recommends their oil changes only take place when the car comes in for its regularly scheduled Audi service. Prior to this I have always taken my cars in for oil changes every 3,000 miles. Here are my questions: Does this problem of the rattling noise/possible camshaft replacement sound familair to you? Is it a ''relatively common problem'' with Audi engines? If I have to have the camshaft replaced, are there less expensive options to properly repair it? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this problem!
