My 1996 sentra is bucking and kicking while driving and dies when idling at lights. I have replaced air, fuel filters as well as wire and plugs. Check engine light does not come on. Fuel economy goes from 32 mpg to approx 20! This happens every few thousand miles and then just stops! Is this possibly the idle control sensor, fual map sensor, mass air flow sensor, or the entire electronic coil system?

Idle control valve will need cleaning, also the mass air flow as well ( mas air flow cleaner only recommended) and the air temp sensor. may need cleaning or replacing, it could also be the spark plugs or leads. it could also need the egr cleaning as well, and sometimes it can be from were you get your fuel. if the garage you get your fuel from when its rain and you fill up and then have problems there could be water in the fuel as some garages don't know that ground water is getting into the tanks under ground.

SOURCE: i have a nissan axxes 1991 the idle is not stable

Have a fuel pressure test done, that will show a weak fuel pump, or bad fuel pressue regulator, also have the throttle position sensor checked.
Could be the idle air control valve,
could be the fuel bypass valve.
Without checking and testing, it's hard to pin point the problem.

SOURCE: check engine light is on, mpg seems to have

Stop at one of the big autoparts stores and they will scan it for free, and that should point you in right direction of what is needed to repair it. If not, get back to us with those codes and we will gladly assist you further. It's faster and cheaper to do it that way, than to guess at it.

Testimonial: "thank you great place to start. did not know they could do this."

SOURCE: car stalled and will not restart

It is possible to have fuel pressure and have injectors that are completely closed. There are light testers that plug into the injector harness to check the pulse to open an injector. Available at autoparts with Tool loaner program.

Try starting fluid to see if it wants to run, If it does, then injectors are not opening, then find cause like camshaft sensor. At that point, like other Expert said, it could be Vacuum leak.

Will not turn over can mean several things. Is it cranking? Is it engaging and not moving the engine? If the starter is not moving then you have to go through the interlocks with brake pedal and shifter. But these work after the engine runs and would not cause it to stall.

Try the starting fluid and see if the spark is working, then shift to fuel delivery if it tries to start.

Could be a dirty throttle body, vac leak, or a defective idle air control valve. The computer adjusts idle speed by controlling the amount of air entering the throttle body via the control valve.

The ac compressor does put an additional load on the engine.
Any minor problem with performance can be amplified with the ac on.
I would check fuel pressure and look at the idle air control valve.
Also check the computer for trouble codes.
Both 6 and 8 cyl engines use a cap rotor and wires arrangement, so it wouldn't hurt to make sure those components as well as the spark plugs are in good working order.
The bucking on the road and stalling at stops could be two different issues.

thats what it sounds like, a bad or clogged up fuel filter. if it bogs down when giving it gas, or going up a hill. its probably the fuel filter not letting enough fuel to engine. that is why it stalls at a stop. if this helps but not fully. check or clean idle air control motor. this is what maintains proper idle of vehicle. have a good day !!
