The aternator light in my 2001 Ford Taurus came on so I bought & installed new alternator & battery the alternator light went off so I drove the car for 2 days on the third day my new battery was drained. I then charged the battery and detached the cables for the battery and the car died. The car won't run on alternator alone.

bad alternator possible or bad battery..even though its new that battery can be bad. I would take a volt meter and with the engine running check the volts of the battery..If the volts are 12 you need to replace alternator, if volts are 14 you need to check the battery. to check the battery hold the volt meter to the battery and have someone start the car..while the starter is cranking battery volts should not drop below 10volts.if they do your battery is bad.

You obviously have a short. I think it may be your starter selinoid or starter relay. It could also be a mercury switch failure in your trunk or under the hood. They turn the lights on & off accordingly under the hoods. Have your starter checked out. Also it could be an ignition switch problem. Check the starter first. Good luck!

need more information, does it crank, and not start? Or no crank? If it cranks and does not start, the first suspect would be a crank sensor, they do that...if it does not crank, the battery has to be charged first to get it to crank-we can go on from there...
