I have a Vauxhall Frontera with Isuzu 2.8TDI engine I believe they are known as Isuzu Rodeo/Amigo’s in the USA.
I have had this vehicle now for nearly 15 years and some 220,000 miles. The oil pressure at idel has always been low around 15-20PSI rising to about 40PSI on the highway and been constant at this pressure.
About a year ago I noticed that if I put my foot down on the accelerator the oil pressure would instantly rise with out the corresponding build up in revs, and also instantly drop when foot was lifted off accelerator. I mentioned this to garage at the time and they said it was probably a fault oil pressure sender. I thought nothing more about it. A year then passed car running well but as time went by oil pressure crept steadily higher. So I got the garage to change the sender, no change they said it must be the meter in the dash. So did nothing more. Now I have an oil leak from the rear main bearing. The needle is permanently off the scale when driving on the highway. And oil pressure is over 50psi and bouncing up and down at idel. Garage now want to replace rear main bearing oil seal but I insist there is more to it than simply a faulty meter and an oil leak. My thinking is that there is head gasket problem or a crack and combustion gasses are getting pumped into the oil channel. There is also an exhaust smell if you remove the oil filler cap with engine running. What do you think I should do? I don’t want to consider scrapping the vehicle coz the body work is in good condition and recently had a gearbox replacement.
