Gas filler neck corroded causes check engine light to stay on, any ideas?

The EVAP system on OBD-II equipped vehicles is monitored by the computer. When the gas cap is bad, or if there is a break in the system somewhere, this alerts the computer (ECU) of a problem and the ECU will turn on the check engine light to alert you of a problem. Although not normal, it is something that can happen and need replacement. You can inspect the filler neck yourself for visible damage (it is the flexible/ribbed hose going into your fuel tank from the filler) and replace the gas cap yourself. i might suggest replacing the gas cap and then having an Auto Zone or Napa reset your computer to see if the cap was the extent of the problem before i paid a shop to replace the filler neck. If the cap was specified as a problem, you really have nothing to lose on pursuing this fix first. Also, if you can order the filler neck, this is a relatively easy replacement and requires only shadetree mechanic skills.
i hope this helps,

You should get the problem code ran at a shop or auto parts store. My moms 2003 Toyota Echo check engine light came on and it had a slight misfire, I replaced all the sparkplugs about $20 and no check light.
Hope this was helpful

You have another code other then EVAP, have it scan to get codes.
SOURCE: 2003 toyota echo p0442. I have
P0442 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (small leak)
not
P0457 which is the gas cap is loose or off.
This means that there may be a leak in the hoses that lead from the gas tank to the charcoal canister, if so equipped.
Good luck on finding the leak and repairing.

easiest place to start is to stop at your local autozone parts house, or even some shops will scan your car and tell you what the code causing the light to come on for free.
