I assume you mean low idle speed 500 rpm. Genarally a tapping noise comes from the valve train, and a knocking noise comes from the crankshaft connecting rods. The way that a mechanic will narrow it down is to use a mechanics stethoscope. You can get one pretty cheaply at an auto parts store. Put the metal end of the scope on a part of the engine and listen for noise. On the other hand, if your car is idling at 5000 rpm, it would also be making ALOT of noise.

SOURCE: I need the firing order

I found an illustration for an 87 Civic 1.5L engine, carbureted. By the looks of it, it's 1-3-4-2 although this graphic shows a round cap. I see the Accord 2.0L does have the plugs in a line, not in a circle. Hope this helps!

SOURCE: gauges don't work on 2004 Honda Civic EX

it sounds to me that the instrument cluster has gone bad. not for certain because I cannot see it but if you have a mechanic tell you that it is a very strong possibility.

Try cleaning your sensors, located on the throttle body with spray cleaner, especially made to clean sensors.

Car runs fine otherwise, yet it revs itself up to over 22k rpm and smokes like a beast. This will go on for some time, then it will rev back down, and stop smoking. Then it will rev back up and smoke.

With due apologize, the very first thing which I would like to amend is that it is not 22 k but it is 2.2 k (2200 rpm).
To solve the problem please check the following:
- Vacuum leaks. (PCV valve, A/C idle up vacuum switch and actuator, vacuum hoses routing, gasket intake manifold, distributor vacuum dash pot.
- Valve clearance.
- Ignition system.
- Carburetor vents and lines for clogged.
- Idle speed solenoid switch and its connection. (Remove the solenoid, put a finger on its hole on the carburetor, start the engine keeping the finger on the hole. If it maintains the stable rpm replace the solenoid or check the voltage on the switch).
- Adjust the air fuel mixture.

Would a 1984-1987 Honda Civic sedan/CRX hood release cable work as a replacement for the 1984 Honda Civic wagovan hood release cable?

The dimensions of those cars are nearly identical, so I would be highly surprised if it didn't fit. If it is only a cable you should be just fine. Those things have a high level of interchangeability.
