SOURCE: 1988 VOLVO 240 RR BRAKE LIGHT & BACK UP LIGHTS

In my own personal experience, you should first adjust the nuetral safety switch, it controls the reverse lights. After that, remove the jaw clip from the back of the tail ight, clean the connections, and the take a thin pick, and close the 2 metal pins together in the different sections of the jaw, with enough space between them to plug them back in. The connections inside the clip tend to expand away from the printed tail light curcuit over time.

Testimonial: "Hey, thanks for the tip! I will try it! every time I step on the brakes the "bulb out" light goes on & it's driving me nuts! thanks again."

SOURCE: how to changehead light bulbs on volvo v70

To gain access to the bulbs, you need to go under the bonnet (/hood) and remove the housing cover on the reverse side of the light units.
Should just be a simple clip, but make sure that it doesn't fly out of your sight;)
Relatively simple for the rears too.
Just plastic covers on the reverse side of the units, with clips that could break, if you are too rough with them.
Have fun.

Welcome to Fixya

If you already tried the paper clip method then most likely the tail light assembly circuit board films or wirings that is having the problem. Use a test light to check for power at the tail light assembly, while you have the switch bypassed.

I have an 86 volvo, brake lights were working then suddenly not. Ive checked bulbs, wiring. Tale lights work, headlights work, but no brake lights. Please help .....sincerely, girl that doesnt know...

It coould be the brake light switch, the wiring or the bulb failure relay under the dash. You will need a test light and a wiring diagram to find the problem. If you can get someone knowledgable about cars to help you, I can send you a wiring diagram.

Bulb failure position light

most likely your brake light. Also if no brake lights are out, volvo is notorious for putting the wrong bulbs in from the factory. If they work take them out, if they have an orange bottom inside the buld replace the bulbs. I used to be a volvo tech. I would replace both so you dont run into this problem again

96 volvo 850 tail light has light bulb for fog lghts **** hey never turn on. how do they turn on or should i remove the bulbs.

There should be only one rear fog light, that would be the drivers side. There is a rocker switch up at the dash with a picture of a crude looking light. When you move this switch, it should put an orange light on the dash, at that point, your ONE rear foglight should be on. They are extremely useful during inclement weather. They are bright like your brake light, and allow cars coming up from behind you, to see you earlier
