The other night we were driving home and the dash lights flickered then the dashboard lights and taillights went out. The dimmer switch was very hot when the lights went out.

Did you try the dial that adjusts the brightness of the dashlights? If that is not the problem it is most likely a fuse. Check to make sure you have taillights because some vehicles have taillights and dash lights on the same fuse.
Start by cleaning, or replacing the corroded part. Charge the battery, if necessary. If the car starts, then take it to AutoZone or O'Reillys and have them test the alternator, usually for free.
this problem is caused by a tiny micro switch that is attached to the door latch inside the doors, the stick and give this false warning, have replaced dozens of them, it is called the "door ajar" switch oddly enough :)
Check the brake fluid. It may be just low enough to occasionally turn the light on as you hit bumps and it sloshes a little. Add a little brake fluid to the reservoir and check the brake pads all around.
Sounds like loose wires. Had a similar problem with my 03 Durango. Kept blowing fuses when I put them in. Came to find out my trailer wiring harness had fried and was shorting out.
i have replaced my dimmer roller switch to solve my problem with the dash bord light flickering and dimming by them selfs .. that or just flip (smack) the roller switch for temp inprovement untill you decide to install a new dimming switch..?
As long as all fuses are good, you need to check the light switch its self. Remove the light switch assembly from the dash. With a 12 volt circuit tester, check the wiring coming out of the switch. The dash lights will be powered along with the side marker lights.
Probe each wire that joins the switch, turning the switch on and off. If you don't have any loss of power here, it can be at the printed circuit board at the dash.
