92 LS400 stops and won't start for a while.

It's cold out. The engine runs fine. 173K miles.

After car is sitting it starts and drives forward but as soon as brakes are applied (after 20' or so) it stops moving and won't move again for a while.

Dealer says the gears are stripped and it needs a whole rear end. If the gears are stripped why does it move forward as if nothing is wrong until the brakes are applied?

Is it the transmission? Is something sticking and needs time to release itself? Anything quick, easy and cheap that's worth trying?

Mechanic friend says it's not worth the aggravation and to part it out but that seems criminal with a car that should have a lot of life left. Please- Any suggestions or explanations?

Thanks for responding to the problem. It won't go in reverse. Took it out for a spin to recharge the battery. Kathunk. It might be the transmission. My neighbor, the only guy not watching the SuperBowl, towed me back down the road to my driveway. sigh.

I would be looking for a vacumn hose leaking. The cold engine needs a rich mixture and braking uses the vacumn booster causing the mixure to lean. A warm engine races with the extra air.

2000 olds intrique 3.5 runs great but all at once will idle up when sitting still dont happen all time and shows no check engine light?

Volvo v40gdi sometimes won't start but starts fine from cold when trying to start it chokes and struggles if I remove air filter assembly it starts fine,

1997 Buick intermittent starting problem

Do you own a scan tool ? One that shows engine sensor data parameters ? Checking sensor data would be the thing to do .
