Indeed the engine mounts can cause this type of symptom, have a local shop check the engine for excessive lift up on gear engagement.

SOURCE: 96 grand prix slipping transmission

Once it starts slipping in all gears it needs a kit. You need a hoist to get the thing out and back in. If you are looking for a low buck fix many junkyards will sell you a used one and put it in. They are almost always cheaper than a "Transmission Shop". If you have the tools and want to do it yourself buy a service manual for the car from eBay or Amazon or a former Pontiac dealer and have at it. It's not all that difficult with a hoist but it is still along day.

Most likely it's going to be the motor mounts, the bushings are common to go bad on front wheel drive cars and will need to be replaced. Replace them with urethane engine mounts, they last longer and cost about the same as the OEM from the dealer.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck

I would look for an adjustment to the cable, or possibly a bad motor or trans mount.

Transmission clunking when shifting to drive from park

could be your motor mounts are bad or are going bad the rubber mounts weaken over time and when u shift the engine tilts farther then it should when it shifts from park to reverse or park to drive. Its also a good idea to check your transmission fluid level with the car running and pull out the dipstick. if the level is fine and ur ****** isnt slipping then its prolly not the ******.

I believe that I have either a bad transmission mount or mounts, and possible a bad motor mount or mounts because the car vibrates in drive while running and also vibrates in neutral while running but not...

Get a friend to open the hood and look at the engine go up or down in the engine compartment when the brakes are firmly applied and switching between reverse and drive. Look for the motor mounts for behavior where tears exist in the rubber.

The car vibrates when in drive while at a stop. What would cause this ?

Vibration at idle brings to mind a few suspects:

transmission mount(s) broken/missing
transmission internally worn
motor mount(s) broken/missing

(1) transmission internally worn or transmission mount broken/missing - test this by shifting into neutral at the next stop light. If the vibration disappears when you disengage the transmission, then the transmission is the source of the vibration. You'll have to inspect the transmission mounts - if they're ok, then the transmission is internally worn and can no longer smoothly "slip" while idling in drive.
(2) motor mount broken/missing - also test this by shifting into neutral at the next stop light. If the vibration persists, then the transmission is exonerated, and the vibration is coming from (under) the engine. The rubber part of motor mounts commonly crack/break and or pop out and are lost.

there is a high possability that a plate inside the transmission is loose. if it starts to take a while between putting it in reverse and actually getting reverse (including the thud) its a good bet thats your problem.

Feels like transmission is slipping when changing gears.

Your TCU (Transmission Control Unit) is bad it will have a burnt diode inside it. You can find it behind the kick panel on the passenger side. i found them on ebay for about 79.00 with exchange.
