Gearbox fault of Jaguar S Type

Hi,
Jaguar S Type, March 2000, 94000 miles, started showing warning sign "gearbox fault" intermittently. No noise and running smooth but somtimes erratic gear changes. Jaguar dealer diagnosis shows code P0795. Told I need a new gearbox £3500, but car only worth £3000. Is there anything I can do?

Unfortunately when that code, and that gear box fault light comes on, its pretty much game over for the transmission. It only a matter of time before performance of the transmission gets worse and worse. BUT that transmission is VERY easy to replace, i would check out a few trustworthy independent shops to give you a better price! I am usually a die-hard dealership, having been working at this jaguar land rover dealership for the last 2 years, but you are pretty much for sure going to be a cheaper price on the labor and like i said it is a pretty easy task.

My only precaution MAKE SURE IF YOU GETTING A USED TRANSMISSION THAT YOU GET SOME TYPE OF WARRANTY ON IT. Too many times have I seen customers loose thousands of dollars paying someone to put a used engine or transmission and have it fail almost right away.

How do i fix gearbox fault warning in a jaguar x type 2002, some times, the engine does not rev after starting and goes off on it's own.

you need to get the fault codes out of the tcm (transmission control module) to help sort that out but check the fluid level first. the jatco gearbox in that model year xtype auto are very unreliable

Jaguar s type 03 gearbox fault warning light on dashboard, gear stuck in 4, reverse engages ok, what could it be?

sounds like it is in get you home because of gearbox failure if its the early box with metal sump check selector cable adjustment it critical as the J gate micro switches and the linear switch on the side of the gearbox have to be in sync with each other. on the other hand if it is the later gearbox with plastic sump, which i suspect it will be, check it has not lost some of its oil due to leaking sump, common problem! other wise check fault codes in transmission control module, any codes relating to incorrect gear ratio means internal falure most times

Whenever this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM, SRS and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

Engine management system has recently started to show orange engine sign followed by gearbox fault intermittedly .car seems to be wavering very slightly in stearing.2001S type v6 auto petrol ,was told...

This could be caused by many things - but don't panic - as the car is driving okay it is probably a spark plug coil as at your mileage you are due a change. The gearbox fault sign can be caused by the engine misfiring and confusing the gearbox controls - happened to me - took lots of investigations to prove it. Best to get your car on a diagnostics rig and see what faults are recorded. good luck - hope this helps.

If everything is functioning properly, it could be a sensor going bad, sending wrong information to the computer.

GEARBOX FAULT MESSAGE for jaguar s 2001

Replace transmission and sell quickly. I bought 2001 s-type in October 2008. I have not been able to drive it. 1st thing was gearbox fault message which turned out to be transmission. Ford can rebuild cheaper. Next thing to happen was all seals needed replacing. Then all coils needed to be replaced. Coils keep going out. Needs new computer which has 8 year/80000 mile warranty on, but Jag would not honor ($3000). Needless to say my pretty jag sits in the driveway. Had to get another car. Went with Lincoln LS V8. GREAT car!

On rare occasions warning light on dash indicates gearbox problem

I just can't see the gear box itself being bad if all is still in working order. I'd be checking the sensor that's sending this message.
