Battery wont hold a charge

The alternator tests as good. There is a black box on the back of the alternator that if we pull up on that it charges up the battery but as soon as we let that go the battery loses power

That's too bad that your alternator still works, but the battery won't stay charged. I have to plug mine in during the night to make sure that my car will turn on in the morning. We should probably both find somewhere to get replacement car batteries. http://prochoiceseries.com.au/product-ra...

My husband was having this problem with his car a little while back. The wires around this battery has started to rust out. I would check that and make sure those are all good. It was east to replace, at least that's what my husband said. It was also very reasonable to replace.

Make sure all connections at alternator are attached. On some, the regulator is inside the computer and if bad, requires computer change.

If you have a fuse it will be in the power distribution center near the battery main fuses and relays are inside.
Check the charging system with a volt meter right at the battery. Battery standing charge should be no lower than 12v if charging you should read between 13 and 14 volts running, about 13 with all electricals turned on. If not, the alternator isn't working OR the regulator has failed. (some regulators are part of the main computer but you need to check which system you have. AND do check for fuses.
If charging system is working you may have a system draw that is pulling the system down overnight. Check that with an ammeter between either cable (removed from battery) and battery connection...pull fuses one by one till draw disappears then check components in that system. Don't be concerned with "low Draw" items such as radio that always pulls something to keep memory and clock working.

SOURCE: 1994 jeep grand cherokee battery wont hold a

Hi.

The "battery not holding charge" means that the battery charge goes down by itself after the battery has been fully charged either by the alternator driving the car, or using a battery charger. If the battery does not hold charge, then the problem is usually the battery itself.

The battery can only be tested using a battery tester or replacing it with a good one. Reading Volts across battery terminals is not a good test.

Before replacing the battery read volts across the battery terminal to ensure alternator is good. If alternator is good, Volts with engine on must be between 13.5 and 15 (see: ALTERNATOR - Jeep Garage).

If the battery and alternators are indeed good and the battery looses charge in several hours, try disconnecting battery terminal immediately after turning engine off. If battery does not go down with wires disconnected, then there is a parasitic drain, which means a short circuit, somewhere in the car's wiring. Common points for parasitic drains are car stereo and wiring in steering column.

If the battery stays charged, but starter motor is clicking and not cranking, then the problem is usually the starter motor itself.

Regards.

Ginko

Replaced the alternator and battery in 97 subaru. Still wont hold a charge any suggestions

Here's a test you can try. With the car running in idle, disconnect the negative side of the battery. Does the car still run? If it does, then the alternator is good. What's the voltage reading? If the car should die, then there is a problem with the alternator or the voltage regulator or some wiring associated with the charging circuit. Good luck.

Has the battery been tested? Have you run a battery draw test with a multimeter set to milli amps? If so what is the reading? Also check and make sure no lights are on in the car, check the visor vanity lights, glove box, console if equipped, trunk all of them, do it at night.

1998 Plymouth Breeze Drains the battery

Check to see that the trunk light and glove compartment light actually turn OFF when the trunk and glove box doors are closed. Also, if one of the diodes on the alternator has failed, it may still test "good." With the car sitting, ignition off, fully-charged battery, check to see if the back of the alternator is HOT. If it is HOT, replace the alternator.

Altenator and batterie tested good and proper. however when reinstaled it charged properly for first drive out but then stopped chargeing proper. wanted to hold low volt for a bit but eventualy died down...

in 1987 lebarrons the computer in the air box by the battery controls the alternator charge, test the voltage at the back of the alternator with engine running, should be around 14 volts, if it is not you have a defective alternator, if it is then test voltage at the battery, if that is not the same you have a faulty computer which is not uncommon on chryslers.

Battery wont hold a charge. it takes a charge, i drove it around the block, kept it running in park and when i turned it off it wouldn't turn back on.

First, it can damage your alternator to try to charge a dead battery by just driving or running the car. The alternator is designed to maintain the state of charge already in a battery.
Old (pre mid 60's cars with generators could do that).
Have your battery charged and tested. if it checks out, then have the charging system in the car tested. On most newer Jeeps, the regulator is not in the alternator it is part of the computer. If the alternator checks as good but it is not charging, that may be why.
Hopefully you just need a new battery.

Battery wont hold charge

Have you had the battery tested? (a new battery can still have a bad cell)... also, check all leads from the alternator for tightness and correct terminal location. If that's all good, then it sounds like a short if it is slow draining the battery. Check that all items in the car are off and unplug any chargers you have from the cig lighter, also check that the glove box light is not staying on when shut.
