1998 Volvo v70 check engine light stays on always

On starting the 1998 Volvo v70 , the 'check engine' light comes on and then stays on. Dealer said it is due to water condensation some where and suggesed replacing some tubing with a $800+ cost. Dealer said if this is not fixed then this may ruin catalytic converter, eventually costing even more. Does this sound normal?

I have the exact same problem on my 1998 Volvo V70 Wagon. I have it in the shop today waiting on a diagnostic assessment. Bought mine one year ago from a wholesaler, and had their mechanic look at it at that time. The mechanic made a valve adjustment and said it was fine. A friend lent me his OBD tester and it said there was a leak, but the performance of the car never really changed until now (it has been a year). Now it is runs loud although never stalls or has RPMs high or temp high. Waiting to see!

Did the dealer show you the computer diagnostic codes they found to reach that conclusion? If not, ask them to show you and then have them explain what they mean. Write them down and confirm them with another shop, then ask that shop to check on their computer.

Lambda sensors, they measure your fuel air ratio being burnt by the engine and addapt the management system accordingly. You will have to put them both back or the check engine light will stay on.

ABS light stays on after replacing front axles and cv joint on 1998 maxima

If you have NOT had the abs sensor disconnected as part of the process for this repair then it is likely that the sensor has been damaged by the knocking of a hammer on the suspension!
If you have had it disconnected then the dealer will need to reset it with their diagnostic equipment. You should always remove abs sensors before hammering on suspension components

Emission light is on, service light is on, missfire,

all that has nothing to do with this lights being on, you have a malfunction in the electronic engine controls, to find out what it is have the dealer test the system for trouble codes which are stored in the memeory of the cars computer whenever this light(s) comes on.
