you may have spilt some oil onto the exhaust, will burn off depending how much and long you drive to how quick it burns off ,very common with the Espace because of engine configureation
all renault automatic gearboxes are weak i find later boxes weaker than the older units the zf are no better, ive seen these fail at 25,000 miles and older boxes usually last for 60,000-80,000 miles but with such a powerfull engine i would suspect heavy where would occur especially if it has been used for towing or school runs where the box is working hardest changing up and down. ures will have the older gearbox. good luck remember 20 mpg tops lol...
best have the oil level checked, these renault auto boxes are a real problem in the trade. they just don't seem to take the pace, however it could be a connection problem i have had problems with rusty connections.get some one who has a little car knowledge to check the main plugs to the gearbox for corrosion
The gearbox does on have a dip stick it has a filler plug up top and a two part drain plug on the bottom of the transmission.
What you do is once the engine is warm, with the engine running you remove the centre plug and is the gearboxs level is low nothing much will come out. Some will come out as the tube gets full from normal running. If it is high the excess will come out and will stop at the ring.
I had the same problem with my gear box. What I did was remove the tube plug and drain all the oil out of the transmission. You then fill it with 3.5 litres of "Type D" transmission oil. Nothing else. Not Dextron anything or their equivalent.
In effect you have just carried out an transmission service.
I didn't even bother checking the oil level as 3.5 litres is the amount you need to put in and the gearbox has been running perfect ever since. The new oil worked a treat. Snappy changes and the clunking change with the light on stupidity went away.
There is lots of people out there that think the problem is to do with a pressure switch. In a way they are right. As the transmission fluid gets old it's viscosity and properties change. It gets grippier and allows for fluctuations in the pressure in the gearbox.
The best thing to do before sending it to an automatic transmission specialist would be to give it an oil change
it needs 3.5 litres of Type-D transmission fluid. Do not use anything else contary to what you might hear will work. I had the same problem in mine where I could neither put my foot down or remove it from the accellerator pedal without the gearbox going into limp mode.
After the oil change the gearbox has been perfect. the oil only cost $34AUD for 5 litres. Drain all the oil and place 3.5 litres in the gear box.
There is a plug with a square hole that is the filler plug on top of the gear box.
On the bottom of the gearbox there is a filler plug and if you look closely there is a hex head behind that. To drain the gearbox you must undo the outer hex head which is the drain plug/fluid level tube.
It sounds like you have not put enough oil in, To check the level the vehicle must be running, in neutral. if you can give us s transmission number we can tell you exactly how much and what type of oil should be in it.
