Car intermittently began to die, as if it was running out of gas, so I suspected a fuel pump starting to go out. Determined that no fuel problem exists, and got a P0340 error code from the scanner. Car does not start or run at all now. I get fair spark on #1 and 4, with weak and (very) intermittent spark on 2 and 3. Cap and rotor are new and no oil is leaking from the distributor. This error code is "camshaft position sensor circuit". Question: is this sensor a replaceable item for this make/model or does it require replacement of the entire distributor? I have heard yes and I have heard no. Question: this issue occurred rapidly, over the course of a day or two. Does this make it "likely" that it is a component issue, rather than a ground/wiring issue? I know that is asking for the sun AND the moon, but I will take any well-reasoned opinions based on experience and/or knowledge. Question: this code says "system". If not the sensor/distributor itself, what are the next most likely failure points in the system, based on the information provided? Thank you!

something to ponder over here as iam not sure what could be the problem here but if its a weak spark then it could be module /coil/crank sensor in that order .These problems will not show up as fault codes i dont think as they are working but not to full efficiency

@Angelito-I do not need the code, I already have it. @tewxalb5421-I'll cherck on that, but I don't think that is the problem. Thank you, though. @Gene-the actual code was P0-340, just as I said it was. I am not sure how that could be "misinterpreted", but I am going to check the source you listed to see if I have misinterpreted your answer in some way. Thank you.
Ended up being a bad distributor. The PCV valve was badf, which increased the pressure, which forced oil into the dristributor. PCV valve on these motors are located in such a way as to require a major effort to remove/install because of the location-it took me over three days to get the job done! But it finally got dopne and the problem has disappeared.
