2000 pontiac montana wipers stuck

The front wipers reset in the up position on the windshield and will not reset in the down (off) position. Everything else with the wipers works fine.

it is usual for all 2000 models. don't spend too much money. it won't fix 100% Even dealer doesn't give guarantee. Best solution is to replace the wiper motor.

I have the same problem. It started awhile ago but would sometimes "park" when turned off. Now they are parking in the upright position. (straight up and down)

my windshield wipers are stuck in the up positon when wipers are turned off. how do u fix this

  • Anonymous May 23, 2009

Ihad the same problem and yes, this pin should not be in the slot when the wipers are down.

the biggest question is: Why put a slot if you don't need the pin to enter in?

at least my wipers park right now!

This has happened a couple of times on my 1999 Pontiac Montana. Here's what I did to fix. Open the hood. Remove the shield over the the wiper cam mechanism on the passengers side. This is easy to access. Road salts and other dust and dirt gets in there and causes the sticking problem. Spray WD-40 in between the parts. Get in there with that little red spray straw and saturate it good, flush junk out. Get in the car and try the wipers. If I remember, you might have to manually place that little knob or lever on top of the cam in the opposite position to get it to resync, but try it first. Be sure the wipers are off when you're spraying the WD-40 so you don't injur your hands. I've had to do this twice and it worked both times.

I removed the clipped-on cover and heavily sprayed the whole motor linkage area and removed the gunk build-up while it was in operation, tried the wipers again and they parked correctly. I followed the same procedure with a spray grease and for now the problem is solved. If it happens again I will tear more apart and do a more thorough cleaning but for a 10-degree outdoor temperature this solved it for now. ;-)

Just did this with my 2003 Montana, and it worked fine, though I had to manually move the pin back into the correct position - it went out of position again after I turned the wipers on and off a couple of times, but with some more spraying and working the pin back and forth, and letting the wipers run, it is working fine now.

We'll have to see how long the fix lasts...

OMG! I have been driving around for a year, thinking it was an electrical problem, that was going to cost me an arm and a leg. I WD-40 it, and it works! Thank you sooooooo much for the post.

I removed the plastic shield over the wiper motor assembly, which is on the passenger side of this vehicle. I looked at the crank assembly and noted that there is a spring-loaded pin in a slot. This pin should not be in that slot when the blades are properly parked. It should instead be on the outside of the rotating center arm.

I moved the pin with a screwdriver and found it to be "sticky". Apparetly the grease on this assembly had dried a bit. To test this theory, I applied lubrication to this area (grease might be better, but.). I worked the pin a little and it seemed free.

The wipers now park in the correct position -- down.

What you need is the cam lever assembly on top of wiper transmistion it brakes causing wipers to stop in up postion or park in wrong position.

Warning: The wiper arm/ motor assembly MOVES in a circular motion. Use care when exposing this assembly.
If your wipers don't park or if they stay in the up position when in the delay mode, you probably have to reset the cam position on the arm assembly. Remove the plastic cap covering the arm / motor assembly located under a plastic cover on the passenger firewall. Once you remove the plastic "hinged" cap on the arm/motor assembly, you will see a silver cam. Note that there is a pin that seats in a groove on the cam. If you had shut off the wipers, and they didn't park, look at the pin location. It should be at least 90' clockwise of the groove. In order to adjust this you will need a 4mm allen wrench to remove the center screw so you can lift the arm assembly off the motor. Lift the motor up and move the wipers by hand to the park position. Turn the cam so the pin moves almost 180' from the seating groove (you may have to partially place the assembly back slightly on the mounting post)this will allow the cam/arm to be placed back on the motor and have enough length in the arm to seat it. (When the top part of the cam is turned, it moves in an elliptical motion and therefore has a "short" and "long" setting.) Place the arm/cam assembly back on the post making sure the bottom of the cam, which has a cut out in the bottom and you will also see a little spring/sensor that is mounted on the underside. This spring/sensor has to be 4-5 mm away from the tab on the mounting surface. Seat the assembly with the cutout portion of the cam centered with the tab on the mounting surface. This will get you real close to that 4-5mm distance. Tighten allen screw to 125 inch pounds.
The Only time the pin is in the groove is when it is DELAY mode.
If you have the pin in the groove when it is parked, it is wrong and more than likely the wipers are not down all the way or the wipers stay in the up position when in the delay mode before cycling. Hope this helps.

I'm having trouble with the wipers ceasing to work. The pin slips down, and I have to get in there and lift it back into position. Of course, it always happens when we're driving in inclement weather, making the roadside repair unpleasant and, more importantly, dangerous.

The real problem is under the clutch mechanism attached w/ one screw, detached it & turn it over you will see a small metal sticking. wrap around this metal is a piece of black metal sheet acting as a spring(if broken replace the whole clutch assembly or fabricate one as i did). PUTTING IT BACK . at a 9 o'clock position there is a **** on the frame, attached the clutch assembly temporarily wherein the small metal goes to the **** . turn counter clockwise manually until the pin will go out go all the way if pin will not go out the small metal is not in the ****...remove clutch assembly ..turn on wiper (w/o its clutch assembly) and turn it off..make sure it is off(motor will run clockwise and would run counter clockwise to go off...W/ wiper BLADES on park position connect everything ...the clutch assembly is connected at a 2 o'clock position...check the length of the connecting rod of the wiper system, you might need to tweak it a bit...In tweaking do not move the motor but detach and attach the clutch assembly. If ever you've taken out the wiper blades, so you have no idea where park is...Then move(left and right) the wiper assembly at maximum( highest point) then attach blades...driver side almost touching the rubber on the windshield...passenger side 4.5" from rubber to the top tip of the wiper blades...When everything is connected and working ...tweak again until satisfied.

How do I reset the home position on the front windshield wipes of a 2002 Pontiac Montana. The bolt holding the transmission came loose and now the park position is out of sink when they are shut off.

remove the bolt and unhock the linkage, next turn on the wipers and then turn the wipers off, this will park the motor , you will then postion wipers in the park postion and put linkage on the motor, this will line the wipers up, good day.

2000 Pontiac Montana with a wiper problem

Check the crank arm on the wiper motor. There is a bracket under the crank arm that has a small upward part on it that the bottom of the crank arm is supposed to stop on when its shut off.

Put the wiper in the pulse position and turn the key on. let the wipers sweep one time then turn off the key.

Look under the crank arm to see where it stopped. It should be no farther than 5 mm from the bracket stop. The stop is often times bent or worn out. You will need to replace the crank arm and the bracket in most cases.

2001 Pontiac montanaThe front wipers park in the up position

This is a common problem with Chevy Venture, Olds Silhouette, and  Pontiac Montana. The mechanical wiper drive and parking cam assembly, if it's not broken, needs adjustment. The spring loaded stop arm should engage the vertical tab on the assembly mounting plate when the wiper motor reverses. See pic.  9a7b0af.jpg
I will upload the instructions to fix this problem, if there is interest.
