2001 oldsmobile silhouette traction corntol is off and ABS light

2001 oldsmobile silhouette traction control light says it is off. Service traction control system display message will display for 10 seconds. The abs light is on. I have checked the brake fluid level. Checked shoes and pads and fuses. Everything I looked at seems ok. When I start the van with my foot on the brake I get no messages and no idiot lights. As soon as I release the brake pedal then the messages appear. The messages also appear if I start the van and my foot is not on the brake pedal. Can you help?

I am having the same problem but mine only does it when the roads are wet. I am going to have a friend mechanic try to fix it soon. Hope he can fix it.

Same problem here. I have had it in the shop 2 times now. Just got it back today. Mech said they fixed to broken wires in the harness. Paid for the work went out to start my FIXED car and there are the lights again.

This is a 2002 with 40,000 miles on it...Heated seats don't work. Informed me that the elements are bad. To fix them $300 per seat with labor. Feel the car has to few miles for these problems... I will not buy GM again,

Same here on a 2002...recent replaced the hub...if it is not that, i am thinking it is something in the wiring harness...cruise control goes off when I switch to high beams too...heater blows cold air and engine gets hot too...horn honks every once in a while on its own too...gremlins!!!

I had the same problem and it all was due to the circuit board in the tail light. This is a problem with this van. The connection for the taillights is on top of the part and moisture accumulates and shorts out the board causing this problem. Hope this helps.

Same problem, also foot on brake when starting delays message. And I have had the taillight intermittent issue also. Tailight even acted up when I was trying to get the state inspection sticker. I have tried several things including silicone spray, usually lamps start working after disassembly and re-assembly, but it never lasts. Those tailights electrical contacts aren't just exposed, the water from the whole roof gets channeled into the crack around back door and then directly into the route the electric harness takes to the tail lights. I sure hope (wish) that is the problem but it seems too easy.

I had a bad front wheel bearing and changed out using AutoZone, the built in speed sensors (in bearing) seem much better than my 97 LSS but that was my prime suspect before reading your post. LSS has similar symptom, no light for get service just traction control & ABS at inappropriate times. LSS separate sensors aim at brake disks and maybe get slung out brake dust.

i have the same problem with the traction control. Could it be the ABS sensor?

I had a new starter put in my 2002 because the starter had a loud buzzing sound and turned over sluggish, battery ok but now even with a new starter its still the same and when I picked it up both my side doors were not workin, my clock wasnt working and my dash looked like a christmas tree where there were so many lights lit. Does anyone know where I can get a wiring diagram for a 2002 Olds Silhouette I have been trying for months no luck

I have a 2002 Silhouette and have had that problem and my mechanic fixed it by changing the front bearing becuse it has a sensor built into it and now that part of my vehicle is fine but my problem now is I have trouble codes p0449 andp0446 come up all the time and my check engine light goes on and off every day or so, this problem is drivig me nuts and has so far cost me almost $3000 in sensors and wire harnesses etc. Does anyone know what it is, the van is getting too expensive in repairs to keep and in Canada if the check engine light is not off for 5 days or more before you get your fresh air test done then it will fail and you will not be able to get your sticker

I agree with the post about the tail lights. And the symptom about the brakes on when starting was also helpful. When I took off my rear tail lights and removed the top light bulb (top of the 4 is closest to connector) then repeat starting the car the problem is gone. I have a whole drawer of these bulbs that I removed, not because the filament was burned out, but because the base (similar to circuit card edge connector) had heat damage and melted. I am not sure exactly what the problem is but I think there are multiple conductors in the fixture which are too close or get moisture shorts. Anyway I hypothesize the circuit for daytime running lights is leaking current into the brake light circuit, and it causes that module that controls traction control and ABS to declare a fault. When you start with foot on the brakes the brake lamp is pulled on (I don't know if switches hi or lo) so that module doesn't declare the fault until you release the brakes.

I put in new bulbs and it works fine for now, but I know it may reappear some day then I will repeat, disassembly of the fixtures and inspect bulb bases for heat damage and clean out and replace. That is what did the trick for me.

Thanks Fixya and all contributors

I had the ABS light come on along with the service traction control. I had it checked at a GM dealer and was told that the right hub needed to be replaced. I OK'd the work thinking it would take care of...

Hi,the traction control light coming up means there is a fault detected in the system and a scan tool will be required to learn what fault has been detected. Possible steering angle sensor, wheel speed sensor or brake pressure sensor since the light comes up when making turns or when backing up. Faults are to be checked and proper diagnostic procedures carried out before parts replacement remedies.....

My ABS and Service Traction Control system lights are on. What could it be?

those lights come on when the system is shut down by the computer. You have to scan the abs system. It is usually one of the sensors. I have seen many of the front wheel bearings being the problem because the sensor is built in and when the bearing goes bad.

The ABS and Traction control both work off the abs system .

Hope this helps.

Traction light stays on as well as my abs would come on and stays on and clicking noise during braking.

Sounds like you have a problem in the front brakes or a front wheel speed sensor. A common cause for a Traction light is a faulty front ABS wheel speed sensor or harness. When the Anti lock brake computer sees a problem in the ABS syetm, it disables traction control as well.
