2000 ford mustang shifting problems

Can only start car when gear shift is in reverse position

Sounds like an automatic? the position selector/which is a plastic sort of triangle that has wires running to it/ location on East/West engine should be at front of Automatic? (Common Problem)

replace the brake pedal switch, it is mounted in front of the brke pedal, this is what makes the silanoid work, if it is not working the silanoid will not.

SOURCE: 1991 Caprice No reverse. Moves in neutral. All forward gears OK.

What engine? Rear wheel drive ?Sounds like shift linkage or cable out of adjustment slightly. Have a look at where cable or rod attaches to transmission for adjustment. If not sure of what your looking for get back to me with info.

I had this problem a few months ago. I was able to drive the car home by taking a screwdriver and overiding the gear. Read your manual and if your car is equiped with an overide it will give you instructions. A little covered hole is to the left of the shift when in park. It is small circle and you must pry out the cover before using a screwdriver head to push the overide. I had to do this to put the car into reverse and then again to put it into drive. The solution: Nissan Auto Service replaced the crankshaft position sensor. Fortunately the car was still under the Extended Warranty at 68,000+ miles and this solved the problem. At 72,000 I had the rear right motor mount replaced. Too early for this. Now I am needing a new AC Compressor (79,000 miles) and it sounds like I'm on the vurge of problems with my catalyc converter. This is not a permanent fix, but you'll be able to shift and drive...this is a "safety feature" when you're break lights aren't working...it may be a fuse issue, i found that didn't help either.

How to drive it while it's "broken" On the top left of your gear shift is circle that looks like a button that is only 3/4 there...see picture (it's circled in red)

pry that off with a key or something... now restart your car, push on the break and at the same time insert a key or something into the now open hole...while pushing down use the other key to shift into reverse. You will need to do the same thing to shift back into park.

Good heavens that is the most inneficient safety feature I've ever heard of. How about instead of leaving the car immoble and keeping you in a scetchy neihborhood to get mugged they just "invent" a warning light notification. grr

I am having the same problem with my 05 Altima. For a temporary rememdy we took stuck a key down into the release hole in front of the gear shift. There may be a little cover over the hole, but if you take it off and stick something in it, it will release the shifter.

Shift lever blocked in position D ?

Could be the park neutral switch. It senses that foot is on the brake pedal so shifter can be moved.

The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities.

My 98 ford mustang is stuck in park

check fuses for brake shift solenoid. the brake pedal position switch is a fuse under the hood. inside the passenger compartment, check every fuse. that's a start for not having more information.

Can't shift

You probably burnt the clutch up.
A good indicator is hard to get into 1st with out grinding as well as reverse, and over all poor ability to shift in any gear.

air in the slave cylinder is more then likely not your problem.
Its pretty hard to do.

Car wont shift into gear

did you check that you still have brake lights ?

Ford has the shift interlock, so if you loose brake lamps, the shifter will not move out of park.

Quick test, turn the key to the on position ( do not start ), and see if the gear shifter will move to neutral.
