You have bad contacts on the starter solenoid. You are going to have to have the starter motor removed, and the contacts replaced. This is a very common problem; I stock several sets of replacement contacts in my parts department.
The downside: If you have a V-8, This is nowhere near an "easy job", as the starter is located directly under the intake manifold. The entire intake needs to be removed to get to the starter. Expect to pay a mechanic 4 hours labour to R & R and repair your starter, plus parts.

When starting car just clicks starter replaced battery checked good but still just clicks when trying to start

If it was a anti-theft system problem ,you wouldn't get any clicking ,nothing ! The clicking you hear could be the starter relay . Problem could also be main battery cable going to the starter .. Voltage drop test the cable's ,ground .

1990 thunderbird sc when you turn the key the car just clicks

It just clicks, this indicates problem with battery or problem with starter. If starter is faulty then battery will just give power to starter and click. The engine will not start due to faulty starter. Most likely starter is faulty, but if both battery and starter checked out ok then there are other possibilities too.Click the link below:-- http://technoanswers.blogspot.com/2011/06/1990-thunderbird-sc-when-you-turn-key.html----------------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Hello, I am having a problem starting my 96 GMC jimmy. The starter does not turn and I hear a clicking sound when I turn the ignition? Would this be a problem with the starter wires or the starter itself?

usually the starter itself try tapping it with a hammer if you can access it easisly tap the top of the starter the solonoid. thats where the clicking is coming from. also make sure your batery it fully charged that will give you a clicking also.

Starting problem

Hello LostLynne.
The most common issue is a bad contact in the starter solenoid.
This solenoid is part of the starter assembly and makes the high amperage battery to starter connection
When you hear the click the solenoid is activating but not completing the battery to starter contact.
If this is an original starter or been on for a long time I would suggest changing the starter assembly.
Also in your under hood fuse/relay panel there is a smaller relay that activates the starter solenoid that should be checked before replacing the starter. Although less common for that to happen it does occasionally cause a problem. Easy to replace too.
If you have further questions please ask me.

Starter just clicks, will not turn over engine

replace the starter, the selenoid is screwed (selenoid located on the starter) easier to replace the whole starter

Starter problem

if you have changed the battery and starter we most likly at this stage rule them out.from experance i would say its an earthing problem; number one ,earth strap from car body to engine, number two earth lead from starter motor to battery, and the last one earth strap from neg side of battery to car body check all these and romove and clean.hope this cures your problem.adrian
