This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

SOURCE: how can i clean the throttle body my self?

You can either clean it on the truck or off, better off of the truck, that way you can get both sides. Take off the black tube coming from the air filter housing, if your going to take the whole thing off the truck, you will need to disconnect the throttle cable from the housing. There should be 4 bolts holding the body onto the intake. Get a can of fuel injection air intake cleaner, spray it in the body and on the plate, wipe dry with a clean cloth. Repeat until clean. When you start the truck back up, it might sound like it's miss firing, don't worry, it will clear up.

Wow, That has gotta be a pain. The Maf sensor regulates the fuel supply needed for proper air fuel ratio by telling ecu how muc air is moving thriugh the intake. Check it first, Then the TPS. Good Luck.

SOURCE: 92 gmc 350 pickup....rough idle..have replaced MAP

This could be a couple of things:

  1. Check that you have not got any vacum leaks between inlet manifold and cylinder head.
  2. Check your spark plugs and HT leads are in good condition and not worn, reset gaps. If worn replace them.
Worse scenario is the head gasket make be leaking water into a cylinder. Get a cylinder leakage test done to verify any manifold air leaks or faulty sealing head gaskets.
Good luck, let me know how you get on.

SOURCE: right off idle truck stumbles and will die if you

its time to stop wasting money guessing and verify if parts are good/ bad. ck fuel pressure, and check the tps (Throttle Position Sensor) , see if it runs better with the EGR valve disconnected. If it does, replace it Use only AC DELCO parts they will need number off old EGR valve usually starts with 17------. NOT from ottozone or others.

Does yours have electronic throttle control ?
P0506 - Idle Air Control System RPM Lower Than Expected (Electronic Throttle Control [ETC] Vehicles) The PCM attempts to control engine speed during KOER self-test. The test fails when the desired rpm could not be reached or controlled during the self-test.

  • Exhaust restriction
  • Engine mechanical fault
  • Damaged electronic throttle body (ETB)
  • Damaged PCM
This DTC is informational only and it may be accompanied by other DTCs. Diagnose other DTCs first. If other DTCs are not present inspect the intake air system for air or vacuum leaks and damage. P0506

P0506 - Idle Air Control (IAC) System RPM Lower Than Expected

This P0506 code is one that's sometimes triggered on vehicles that have electronic throttle control. That is, they don't have a regular throttle cable from the accelerator pedal to the engine. They rely on sensors and electronics to control the throttle. In this case, the P0506 DTC (diagnostic trouble code) is triggered when the PCM (powertrain control module) detects an engine idle speed that is lower than the desired (pre-programmed) RPM.
Potential Symptoms Most likely the only thing you'll notice is the idle speed is lower than normal so it will likely be rougher. There are potentially other symptoms as well. Of course, when trouble codes are set, the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp, a.k.a. the check engine light) illuminates.
Causes A P0506 DTC trouble code may be caused by one or more of the following:
  • A vacuum leak
  • An air restriction in the intake air path or exhuast
  • A faulty positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve
  • Damaged/failed/dirty throttle body
  • Internal engine problem
  • Failed PCM
Possible Solutions This DTC is more of an informational code, so if there are any other codes set, diagnose them first. If there are no other codes, inspect for vacuum leaks, restrictions, and damage. If there are no symptoms other than the DTC itself, just clear the code and see whether it returns.
