i'm having the same problem with my 04 350z

  • Snowman1976 Apr 07, 2009

Im going to try that (lubrication) when I get home - just bought the car and have only played with it for a day.

  • caniac36 Apr 17, 2009

I have a 05 model with the same problem, the dealer said it was probably a switch.

  • rachellane Apr 27, 2009

My problem is a little more extensive. I have an 04 350z convertible and my roof has stop opening all together. The local dealer is telling me it is the motor and the control module in the car. Pls pls pls can anybody help me with this. There's no point in having a convertible if the top doesnt work.

I read the comments with regards to peoples 350Z convertible top troubles. Mine started off struggling and now it barely ever works at all. i want to lubricate it but have no idea where on the car I can access the proper place to lubricate. Can anyone help me or send me to a site that has these specs?

I had same issue. Recently had the dealer replace the straps that pull the top. Works like new now.

I had the same problem. Dealer replaced the "straps", that pull the top.. Cost just over $200.00. Works like new.

The support bar right above your head has 2 elastic bands attached to it, one on the drivers side and one on the passenger side. After time they lose their elasticity and don't pull this bar (the one with the top attached to it) down when you retract. If it doesn't pull down, it will stay up (forward) as the frame retracts and get jammed up in the rest of the frame. Worst case it will pop the metal clip which holds the center of the cloth top to it (it is the length of the bar and spot welded to it) off. It will also put holes in your top on both sides as they don't fold down under and instead get crimped in the frame. Temp solution is to push that bar down as it retracts. Permanent solution is to repair the elastic sooner than later before it wrecks havoc with the whole frame and motor.

What motor will this problem cause trouble too? As there are three motors?

Try using a D R Y L U B R I C A T I N G spray, not WD40 as wet lubes will attract and hold dirt.
Also, refrain from using car washes which could possibly put pressure on the top mechanism rods.

I had the same problem with my '04. Took it to the dealer who blamed it on poor lubrication, due to lack of use. He sprayed the mechanism with WD40 and it started to work. Later I added some silicone spray lube and I haven't had a problem since.

Where did you spray the WD-40 / silicon spray? Can you describe it in further detail? I'm having the same problem on a 2004 nissan z

Also, if it's cold out, it is just due to the fabric being stiff. Let it warm up and that should correct it.
