As the name implies, it control most of everything electrical related to the body. Complete function list varies from model to model and make to make, but they usually can control wipers, turn signals, door locks, power windows, remote keyless entry, alarm systems, brake lights, front lights, parking lights, dashboards, etc.
first check to see if your parking brake is on, make sure it is fully down, if that is good you will need to check you brake fluid level, top up if low, and i would advise to check brakes on car for worn or leaking components, this does not mean you need brakes, but as friction material wears(brake pads) the caliper holds more fluid so leaving low in master cylinder reservior.. remember if you need to top up, use only dot 3 brake fluid

brake resevior is located only hood open, just below wiper on drivers side
if your back brakes are stuck on then jack up back end remove wheels take of parking brake first though and hit drums with hammer or if it has discs remove caliper by removeing two bolts on back of caliper and remove pads use large pliers or grips to squeeze in the 2 pistons then loosely asemble and put on park brake and see if the brakes lock on again if so repeat and try again untill they are free and dont leave a car parked for a long time with park brake on use blocks under wheels or they will seize
Check the brake fluid. It may be just low enough to occasionally turn the light on as you hit bumps and it sloshes a little. Add a little brake fluid to the reservoir and check the brake pads all around.
Replace rear brake pads. If that doesn't help, remove the plastic console around the parking brake lever and adjust the pull on the lever. It's probably so loose that it's trigger the light.
This is not normal, looks like someone accidentally drove several miles with the brake on.
Viwing wiring diagrams to see what these thing's share , B+ voltage supply or maybe a control module ,such as a BCM - body control module etc..... It does sound like faulty wiring or maybe a loose connection . People on here can only give suggestions , ultimately it's going to take someone who is knowledgeable in automotive electrical trouble shooting to diagnose this problem . Do you know anything about automotive electical circuit's ? What a wiring diagram is an how to read one ? Electric Testing Techniques You Need to Know
Learn to diagnose electrical problem's an get a http://www.alldata.com/ service repair infomation manual an a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter . Also go http://www.autoshop101.com/ an study up on how electrical circuit's work .
