My 2006 nissan altima spits n sputters while driving down the road. If im stopped it shuts off unless i put it in neutral and give it gas? but sometimes when i put it back in drive it shuts off also. ive taken it to a garage and had them hook it up to the code machine and no codes come up? ive also had my battery tested as well.

I would first check the plugs .If that don't work then you have a timing that's out or fuel starvation. When last did you change the airfilter

there is currently a recall being performed on altimas and there is also a updated crank position sensor check with your dealer for open recalls on your vehicle (its just a phone call away have your vin # ready (located on left bottom of windshield if your facing it from in front of vehicle it is on lower right side of windshield - also look on driver door jamb.

SOURCE: car have touble starting and staying start

it could be a bad belt or signs that the fuel pump is getting weak put some STP gas treatment in the gas tank make sure you have at least a half a tank of gas before you do this ask yourself when was the last time you changed the fuel filter

Call ahead and then go to a local autoparts chain. Verify that they can read your OBD1 code. Most can only read 96 and newer OBDII. It may be worth paying the diagnstic fee at a Nissan dealer to find out what your code is. The codes are system specific and take the guesswork out of emissions system diagnosis. Consider this: When was the last time you had a tune up? Worn and out of spec gaps on your spark plugs can diminish performance, yet the car will idle fine without a load on the engine.

There could be a problem with the security system or the main computer could have a burnt spot or a crack in the board. Had an issue a few years back with a Dodge Dakota will run fine when a computer got hot it would shut down. I would take it and have it put on a scanner to see if there is any codes then go from there

2001 Nissan Altima shuts off in hot weather

it is the cam position sensor...the telltale sign of the failure is that it happens when the vehicle is warm and has been driven for a while. Sensor is about 40 bucks at the auto parts store, make sure the replacement sensor is metal, not plastic.
The main symptoms of this sensor failing are rough starts, rough idling and not starting at all especially when warm.
