03 honda Odyssey gas smell and check engine light

Check engine light came on. Mechanic said it was a generic error and probably my fuel cap. Cleared error. Cap and seal are fine and closed tightly but check engine light returned and there is a fresh gas smell in the cabin. This smell is present whether the car is running or not and has nothing to do with the amount of fuel in the tank.

I have a similar problem. Instead of gas, I smell fumes or emission, and the check engine light is on. I went to an auto parts store. They scanned the computer, and it read one of the sensors needs checking. Do you have an answer please. Car is 2002 Nissan, Sentra 1.8 engine, automatic.

    Thank you in advance.

I've got a '99 Oddy with the same symptom of gas odor inside and outside of the vehicle. Gas cap was secure and the level of fuel made no difference, so by process of elimination, I checked and followed the fuel lines and made sure there were no cracks that I physically could put an eye and hand on and eventually ended up at the fuel injectors and fuel rail. From there, all you need to do is remove the plastic cover plate from the intake plenum and the injectors will be exposed as well as the fuel rail. Turn the car on and wrap some paper towel over your hand like a mitten and run it over the suspected areas. You'll either find your leak there or the fuel filter located under the rear sliding doors.

Did the mechanic check for engine codes with a scan tool? If not, u can have it done at most parts stores for free. Write down any codes they get off the honda's computer, ask them what to do to correct any trouble codes they find, and if it has anything to do w/ the gas smell. Have u checked under the car and in the engine compartment for evidence of gas leaks? Keep in mind that gas evaporates rather quickly, so it can be difficult to spot a leak. Put a large piece of cardboard under the car, and check it for wet spots or stains after parking. Let me know how u make out and if u need further help.

Smelled gas and check engine light came on. Periodically have smelled gas over the past 6 months or so. What is cause?

Hi Ed.
this is all i could find at the moment.
Gas Cap Causing Gasoline Smell in Car. I know it may seem obvious, but a loose or missing gas cap can cause a fuel smell in your vehicle. You could even have a faulty gas cap that is leaking fumes. A faulty gas cap can also cause the check engine light to illuminate with a DTC on newer cars.

I have got misfire in many cylinder,i have got code p0302,p0304,p0305,burn alot of fuel, smell gasoline in side, engine start loudly,

I would start with a tune-up: new plugs and wires, new distributor cap/rotor button, new air filter, maybe a new fuel filter. If you get gas at the same location all the time, try a different one for a while too.
These would be the easiest to do first to eliminate some common issues.

My Honda odyssey 2013, there is gas leak . Smell strong when we open our kitchen door to the garage in the morning. Brought it to the honda shop in Williamsburg. Couldn't find the problem . We lalso...

First advice: do not park the car in the garage until you've found the cause of the smell and fixed the leak. It takes very little gasoline vapour in a confined space to form an explosive mixture which could be detonated by a small static spark.

Error code P1457 2000 Honda Odyssey

this code is sometimes set because of a loose gas cap or a leaking gas cap. the code is set when the fuel vapor management system detects a leak.

Obd code p0457 fuel cap replaced mil reset defect not cleared connection checked ok

The code is for a large leak in the EVAP system such as a loose or missing gas cap. But it could also mean a loose or missing hose to the canister or other leak in the tank.
The computer vents the tank several times an hour while the engine is running, and it checks the system by pressurizing the gas tank. If the tank will not hold pressure the code is set.
You may have to check the top of the tank where the fuel pump gasket is, as well as the vent lines to the front of the car.
A mechanic would perform a smoke test to look for leaks.

I have honda odyssey and the service engin coms on and the cod is p1456 so ineed to figur out thanks.

This probably means:
  • P1456: Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (Fuel Tank System)
  • Usually this is because your gas cap was not fully tightened. Be sure to turn it until you hear a click.
  • After you tighten the cap, it might take a couple days of driving before the light goes-out.
  • Be careful to tighten your gas cap regularly, because otherwise it puts a heavy strain on your emission system.

P1456

code P1456 set when there's small leak in the fuel tank system.
Most known reason for P1456:
-Didn't tight fuel cap on until it click for more that 3 time after fueling up and drove the car too long with cap loose.
-or a bad gas cap.
I'll try tighting the gas cap.
clear check engine.
if code come back, replace gas cap and clear check engine light again.

Check engine light came on. Code P1456.

Did you change the gas cap with a Honda gas cap? Tighten it at least three clicks?
Also, Honda recommends that you never top off the tank when getting gas (only go to the click-off of the pump; otherwise you can get back flow into the system that will cause the code).
Tightening or replacing the cap will not immediately cause the light to go off; it can take up to three days of driving for the light to reset.
To check if your readiness codes (emission system) are set, turn the ignition to ON (II), without starting the engine. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp will come on for 20 seconds. If it then goes off, the readiness codes are set. If it blinks 5 times, the readiness codes are not set.
You can, of course, try resetting your engine light to see if it will come back on (which it probably will). I believe the procedure is:
Turn off the engine.
Press and hold the Select/Reset knob (odometer) in the instrument panel, then turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
Hold the knob for approximately ten seconds until the indicator resets.

Hope this helps you.
